Land grabbing in Oromia and largely in regions of Ethiopia's south was discussed in-depth at the 2013 Oromo Studies Association Conference at Howard University in Washington DC on August 4. Researchers presented a few papers from multiple perspectives on the topic, which was followed by a heated and insightful Q & A from the audience. Problems were identified, discussed in details, debated and recommendations made. This audio only includes the Q &  A and the debates, but not the papers presented. Among papers presented, this one is publicly available here for you to read.

OSG: Death in Ethiopian custody of Tesfahun Chemeda, after refoulement from Kenya

Dear Minister,

It is with sadness and anger that I report the death of a young Oromo in Kaliti prison, Ethiopia, on 24 August, yesterday. Tesfahun Chemeda was a student activist in Ethiopia and a political activist among refugees in Kenya, where he was granted refugee status by UNHCR. He was arrested with a colleague, Mesfin Abebe, by Kenyan anti-terrorist police on 2 April 2007.

Although cleared by the anti-terrorist unit and by the FBI, the men were subject to refoulement to Ethiopia at the request of the Ethiopian authorities. UNHCR, the Refugee Consortium of Kenya and the Kenyan Human Rights Commission were told in court, after their application for habeas corpus, that the men had been returned to Ethiopia, whereas they remained in custody in Kenya for at least two more days after the court hearing. UN General Assembly:Ethiopia's Leaders Misrepresent Poverty and Conflict

Ethiopia's Leaders Misinform the World

New York has hustled and bustled with heads of state and delegations visiting the city to attend the 68th UN General Assembly. Ethiopia's PM Hailemariam Desalegn and Foreign Minster Dr. Tedros Adhanom each made speeches on themes relating to sustainable development, conflict and security in Ethiopia and Africa. The PM spoke as a head of state and  chairperson of the African Union during the General Assembly "Debate", while the FM Dr. Tedros Adhanom spoke during the after party by Global Citizen Festival,an anti-poverty advocacy concert ambitiously campaigning to end extreme poverty in 2030, at Central Park, New York. This analysis focuses on unpacking for readers how the two leaders of the known autocratic and genocidal Ethiopian state went to great heights using the international opportunity afforded them to take a domestic version of their propaganda to international levels.

Making speeches at such important global venues is assumed to be a "deliberative process" that influences UN policy and decision-making. Because of the global reach of their speeches, we cannot take the speeches very lightly. The speakers had single purpose in minds when they delivered two speeches that relied on a fundamentally similar narrative framework: Ethiopia's economic growth and its asserted "success" in meeting the Millennium Development Goal on child morality, the promotion of a false sense of peace and tranquility while the country is  in ever-increasing turbulence in reality because of the excessive repressions in Oromia, Ogaden, SNNP and other regions of the empire. For those who have ever watched Ethiopian Television, there is nothing new in what the leaders claimed. We heard incessant propaganda like that for the last 22 years of Tigray domination of Ethiopian politics and economy via the fake coalition known as the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). The Tigrean People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is the engine of this totalitarian party.  Tired of such propaganda back home, some have even broken their TV and radio sets.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom's "Public Diplomacy" at Global Citizen

At the festival, Tedros employed what appeared to be an innocuous sense of humor as a way of connecting with the audience. Among other things, he asked the audience if he could sing Frank Sinatra's "New York" for them, which they found comical and innocent. The Minster preached the importance of diversity to New Yorkers and told them how Ethiopia's economy is growing and how Ethiopia met its MDG "3 years in advance of the 2015 deadline." The hard fact about preaching diversity to audiences like  New Yorkers is aimed to hide the reality that his regime  not only suppresses diversity for people different from ruling Tigire (and Amhara) ethnies such as Oromo in Ethiopia, but also hides its genocidal aggression towards them. Predictably, the aim of the speech was to hide and misreport the brutality of the Ethiopian "government" and to paint a rosy picture about the genocidal state. Tedros demonstrated that he felt satisfied when he used the opportunity to misrepresent and mislead the so-called "global citizens" (I wonder if they consider themselves such). The Minster could not hide his excitement when he immediately took to his Twitter account on a smart phone and pic-tweeted:
For the UN to facilitate, and for the Global Citizen Festival to give a hot mic to  a leader of one of Horn of Africa's sadistically tyrannical Ethiopia, which murders tens of thousands of Oromos alone, jails and tortures tens of thousands of Oromos, exiles millions, impoverishes and starves millions of others, is nauseatingly offensive to our collective moral character. If the more than 75,000 New Yorkers the Minster addressed knew the atrocity crimes that his regime commits in Oromia and Ogaden, it would shock their moral character that someone brought a speaker from a government that persecutes others based on ethnicity. They would probably run out of Central Park if they knew a representative of a Nazi-regime type from Ethiopia was speaking to them. Most of the free and democratic New Yorkers had no idea that they were being exposed to a  speech from an official whose state practices genocide and slavery; where there is no concept of citizenship even in the 21st century when other people are beginning  to rally behind a dubious and new idea of "global citizenship."

After being introduced by Jeff Sachs, a Columbia University economist and a  supporter of the Tigirean hegemony in Ethiopia, as "an absolutely amazing leader....", FM Dr. Tedros Adhanom, an absolute con artist for his regime, claimed:

" New York, I bring you peace and good will from Ethiopia and Africa...The reason I was invited here is to tell you the success of Ethiopia and Africa. Ethiopia has done lots of strides in economic, political and social fronts. In economic growth, it has registered more than 10 percent for the last ten years. It has already achieved MDG for under 5 mortality rate 3 years in advance of the 2015 deadline...Ethiopia and Africa are on the rise...The other reason you should visit Ethiopia is because everybody comes from Africa..."
The direct quote from the speech illustrates how the FM employed core elements of common pro-regime propaganda strategies to swindle the New York audience. Most of his assertions are incorrect and sometimes foolhardy, including his inability to distinguish an outdated model of New York as  a "melting pot" from  a new "salad bowl" concept of diversity. It made him look foolish when he claimed that everyone is from Africa in front of NYC crowd who would at least know that is not true.

Claims relating to meeting MDG goals on reducing child morality are also very deeply questionable as it is very likely that Ethiopia furnished the numbers and UNICEF just ran with it like a rabbit without a second thought.  The World Bank and the WHO are also among groups that joined UNICEF in "compiling" the figures of the purported decrease in child mortality. Since Ethiopia country reports from these organization have a history of bias in favor of the Ethiopian government, it seems that the numbers were fudged.

As far as the common 10% fabricated economic growth figure goes, some serious researchers have found out that, in fact,  it  is a myth in works such as "The Myth of Africa's Rise." It is known already that a simple presence of GDP and increase in trade volumes are not economic development, according to Rick Rowden (2013). It is laughable that Ethiopia's economy is the only economy whose growth remains at 10% for 22 years in a row. Besides, there is little manufacturing as evidence of economic development that Ethiopia can point to as its economy is ideologically-driven to exclusively enrich a narrow group. The economy is also dependent on aid.   It was clear that the Minister was firing a makebelieve narrative or a myth on economic growth and improvement in health conditions in his empire. What is problematic is not that he blurted out whatever came to his mouth;it is shocking the UN and Global Citizen Festival decided to hold up Ethiopia as the best example of development on the continent once again just like the World Bank does. Some have even asked critical questions such as "Why are we funding abuse in Ethiopia?" and attempted to  provided answers.

At best, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, was doing a public relations work on behalf of an illegitimate regime that perpetrates genocide in regions like Oromia and Ogaden.

Hailemariam Desalegn and the Fear of ICC

Although they delivered speeches to two different kinds of audiences, Desalegn's speech in the General Debate is fundamentally similar to the "strong" case Dr. Tedros Adhanom was making on behalf Ethiopia's regime. Showing the usual posturing of Ethiopia to benefit from the war on terror in the region, Mr. Desalegn opened his speech by expressing his solidarity with Kenya on the senseless Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi by Somali extremist militants linked to Al Shabab. That was fair enough (any Oromo could also have expressed sympathy to Kenya) , but the problem is that he goes onto opposing international approaches relating to fighting the culture of impunity among heads of state in Africa.  He talked about "development" deliberately avoiding the link between the human rights abuses record of his government and poverty and underdevelopment in Oromia and other well known conflict regions of the country.  Hailemariam Desalegn made these inaccurate statements meant to build the image of already conflict and diseases-ridden Ethiopia and Africa:

Africa has indeed turned the  corner in reducing the number of conflicts plaguing the continent...ICC has degenerated into a political instrument targeting Africa and Africans.

If you do a bit of psychoanalysis on these statements, you will know that Ethiopia's leaders are self-conscious and insecure about atrocity crimes they commit and they are interested in hiding the fact that conflicts and human rights abuses exist in the country. That is why the PM was castigating the ICC efforts to arrest those African heads of state who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. They know they will be next unless somehow they characterize the International Criminal Court's effort as some sort of the continuation of a spooky European colonialism in Africa half a century later after colonialism officially ended. This clearly marks African leaders' imperviousness to accepting responsibility for the chaos they generate in their countries. If indeed Africa is seriously concerned that the ICC is being used as a political instrument, why did not he propose the establishment of an African alternative to the ICC, something like the International Criminal Court of Africa (ICCA) under the auspices of the African Union?

His government carries out atrocity crimes from murdering prominent Oromo activists in jail to genocidal massacres all over Oromia and Ogaden under excuses of fighting the war on terror and religious extremism when there is none. In reality, these innocent people murdered daily by the regime are ethnic others being isolated and targeted based on their ethno-nationality.

Second, the PM's assertion regarding the reduction of conflicts in Africa is half false because research shows while interstate conflicts have been declining in Africa, intrastate conflicts, including in Ethiopia, are on the rise. The Oromo Liberation Front and the Ogaden Liberation Front respectively have been at war with the Ethiopian state since 1977 and 1993 respectively. OLF and ONLF claim they seek self-determination for politically unrepresented Oromia and Ogaden regions respectively. OLF and ONLF also mention that they were drawn into these conflicts because the Tigrean Liberation Front has violently excluded them from peaceful competition in their constituencies.

Researchers put the intensity level of internal armed conflicts in Ethiopia at the level of "war" or "moderate to medium intensity" (Thmener and Wollensteen, 2012:10; IISS, 2013). Armed conflict databases say that there are more than 25 battle-related deaths per month in Oromia and Ogaden as a result of these conflicts, qualifying Ethiopia well for a country suffering from internal armed conflicts between state and rebels.

Although Ethiopia's PM claimed that there is democracy and good governance in Ethiopia, the hard fact is the opposite--there is an absolute tyranny of unelected minority elites who grabbed power in 1991 through the barrel of the gun and a degree of US assistance and continue to rule through the same method.

Using a public forum afforded to them at the UN General Assembly and at the Global Citizens Festival, these two key Ethiopia's EPRDF officials have proven to us that they were globally implementing  propaganda and image-building strategies they have perfected at home over the last 22 years, basically misinforming the world about what is happening inside its closed door (to media and journalists). They succeeded in doing so since the international community now buys their false ideas about peace, economic growth, development and meeting millennium development goals. For Oromos and most people living in the Ethiopian empire under tyrannical conditions threatening their collective  and individual existence, the speeches were offensive and it was  doubly offensive that those pathological liars were allowed to deliver it on a global stage.

The PM and FM were making the case that they could continue to exercise the culture of impunity without international or local objections. The sprawling Oromo diaspora in Western countries alone is testimony to the fact that the cause of refugee exodus has been repression and conflict resulting from a rigid government policy of isolating and systematically targeting Oromos for multipronged massive human rights violations.

Giving a Hot Microphone Was Not the Right Thing to Do

The right thing to do for the UN and the Global Citizens Festival would have been to categorically distance themselves from being conveyor belts for image-building propaganda campaigns targeting New Yorkers and the world who may have no idea about the atrocity crimes of the Ethiopian regime. Exposing people of the free and democratic world to such nonesenses do nothing short of damaging to the peoples who are really facing brutal repression in their homeland, Oromia, Ethiopia. A good moral character would be to dissociate from criminals even if they are heads of state.  Therefore, the UN's and Global Citizens Festival's giving of hot mics to Ethiopia dictators to misinform the rest of humanity is repulsively objectionable among 94 percent of Ethiopia's population who remain oppressed and voiceless on the global stage.

Are Oromos Singled Out and Disproportionately Tortured in Ethiopia?

You may ask people in Oromia, what is the language most widely spoken in Ethiopia's prisons? Who are the ethnic groups singled out and subjected to extreme torture in Ethiopia's notorious torture facilities? The answers to both questions are Afan Oromo (the Oromo language), and the Oromo people respectively. People have pointed to this time and again to the point that torture and political imprisonments are almost becoming synonymous with one ethnicity in Ethiopia, the Oromo people.

Let's first put things in further perspective before proceeding to the discussion on the torture report released by Human Rights Watch.

According to Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition  (2010/2011 cited in Ayyaantuu.com, 2011)Ethiopia contributes 47.8 percent of the word's torture survivors who flee to the U.S.,making Ethiopia the number one country in Africa and the world with the most numerous torture survivors of the 13 countries listed. Regional human rights abusers such as Eritrea and Sudan contribute 6.5 and 2.2 percent respectively. Of the 47.8 percent torture survivors from Ethiopia, the overwhelming majority who have come forward and testified are Oromo survivors. Some survivors have acted as "Truth speakers", giving testimonies of their experiences in Ethiopia's torture chambers.

Human Rights Watch just released a riveting account of torture in Maekelawi (comparable to Auschwitz of the Nazi era  and Gitmo of the post-9/11 period). This report focuses only on one of hundreds of secret and open torture prisons in Oromia and Ethiopia. The conditions Oromo political prisoners, including school children, who have barely come of age, face in Maekelawi and Kaliti and other facilities of torture is similar to those faced by the Jewish community during the Holocaust. The comparison to Gitmo might be a little far-fetched since Oromo detainees are innocent and unarmed civilians who get thrown into torture prisons in most cases for no other valid reasons than their default belonging in a nationality group that is different, politicized and competing with the nationality group that controls the levers of power through totalitarian parties known as the Tigire Peoples Liberation Front/ The Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front.

I often get asked by Faranjii sympathizers with the Oromo conditions questions such as: did anybody try to sneak cameras into prisons and expose the tortures? Did anyone interview survivors of torture and human rights abuses and archive the information? Why is the Oromo diaspora reluctant and secretive to testify about the torture inflicted on them or on their family members in the homeland?  Often, one finds oneself short of answers when faced with such pressing questions from aliens who care about Oromo.

When it comes to the Oromos doing the work by themselves, the answers to the above questions are resounding NOs, but luckily one could point to the organized work of Oromia Support Group and The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa for their specialty in putting specific ethno-national face to oft  effaced  torture in Oromia, Ethiopia.

You can add Human Rights Watch's, “They Want a Confession”:Torture and Ill-Treatment in Ethiopia’s Maekelawi Police Station,"  to the list of important reports. This is a response to the 76-pages report on the use of torture by the Ethiopian "government" to extract information from political detainees, the largest of whom happen to be from the Oromo people

HRW obtained interview data from over 35 former Maekelawi detainees and their family members of which the most poignant ones are acts of torture perpetrated on two Oromo students:

1) B.G., an Oromo student who was detained for eight days in cell number 8 in mid-2011, described the cell:This cell is partitioned into four others. I was in 8.2 [numbered as such], so they can identify the prisoners. There were four rooms with four people. They were very dark and narrow. The cell was made up of stones with a door and window of metal, there are no holes, and it is totally dark. These cells were only for the people they want to hurt more. There is no space for two people in these cells. I could only sit down and I could not stretch out. There is no toilet—you use the cell as a toilet (HRW, 2013: 29).

Put yourself in B.G.'s shoes and imagine how hard it might be to be targeted with such extreme torture methods in a dark room, possibly for years.  Add to that a complication that no one, not even Human Rights Watch bothers to ask or understand:  who are these people who are being disproportionately tortured in Ethiopia's prison? Who are those who are not and so forth? These are commonsense questions, but answers to them can be very revealing as the ethnicity of those being tortured in Ethiopia are effaced under general and dubious labels such as the one by Human Rights Watch above, which makes it appear as if all ethno-national groups are equally targeted with torture and mass atrocity. They are not--the historic and current ruling ethno-national groups are more or less spared the extreme tribulations the Oromo have to go through based on tramped-up charges.

Also, below is another interesting text relating to the patterns of torture against Oromo students:

[2] L.V., an Oromo student held in Maekelawi in 2012, said his hand was broken when he was beaten on his hand while being held in this position and that over a year later his hand continues to hurt: In the interrogation room there was small piece of metal on the wall. They put me on it and locked my left hand to the wall and then my legs didn’t touch the ground. They beat me on my left hand. I think I was there one
hour, but I don’t know as I lost my memory (HRW, 2013: 34)

These texts are just the tip of the iceberg about what happens in Maekelawi and other torture prisons since many Oromos who end up in Ethiopia's torture prisons barely survive to tell the stories, as in the case of Tesfahun Chemeda and thousands of others who died from barbaric acts of torture inflicted up on them for purposes of extracting information and for many other reasons, including for terrorizing the victims and making them spectacles of violence to discourage other actually or potentially dissenting Oromos.

It's not new or surprising that  Ethiopia is party to many treaties and conventions on torture and human rights. What is surprising is the lack of will among the so-called international community to disinvest from Ethiopia or to enforce regional and international laws to end the kind of torture that singles out members of a single ethnic group.

Many more activists like Tesfahun Chemeda will be killed in prisons, many more school children like B.G. and L.V. are going to endure torture at Maekelawi or elsewhere, while foreign aid keeps flowing into the EPRDF regime's coffer unabated, emboldening the torture nation of Africa, Ethiopia, to even torture more without accountability.

Reports can expose injustice and making headlines can make us happy temporarily, but as long as they are not followed-up by international or regional actions, they just raise our hopes and disappoint us more, but we still need them so the stories of those people who have paid heavy prices are not  lost in vain. We wait hopefully for actions to follow words while also reinvigorating our will and ability to come forward and tell these crucial stories.

Listen to in-depth OPR interview with Bonnie Holcomb by clicking the orange button.

African Studies Association (ASA) will hold its 56th annual meeting under an encapsulating theme"Mobility, Migration and Flows" in Baltmore, Maryland, November 21-24, 2013.

Qeerransoo Biyyaa, host of Oromo Press Radio (OPR), spoke to Bonnie Holcomb, the founding mother of Oromo Studies Association and co-author with Sesai Ibsa of Invention of Ethiopia: The Making of Dependent Colonial State in Northeast Africa about the line-up of events leading up to and during the ASA conference. From the feature interview OPR conducted with Qabbanee, two Oromo Studies panels and several individual presentation slots have been secured at ASA.

A panel on the history and achievement of the Oromo Diaspora rightly identified as, "Past and Present Oromo Diasporas: Experiences, Identities and Achievements," will be chaired by a renowned Oromo Sociologist Professor Mekuria Bulcha.  Sandy Shell will fly in from the University of Capetown in South Africa in time to present a doctoral research  on liberated Oromo slaves in South Africa under this panel. The title of Sandy's work is  The Oromo Children of Lovedale, South Africa: A Prosopography of African Slavery and its After-Effects

Many in the Oromo diaspora and Oromia know Sandy Shell for authoring a  popular  article titled, "How an Ethiopian [Oromian] slave became a South African teacher" for BBC-Africa.  This article has not only been shared thousands of times online, but it also generated immense interest from the Oromo as well as from Oromo rivals who wished to suppress the story. Our sources say Abyssinians tried to discourage Sandy by heckling her and sending vitriolic messages to her employers. Far beyond the BBC article, she wrote a doctoral dissertation by investigating the details of the subject noted above.

An Oromo Studies Association-sponsored workshop will be conducted to honor and introduce Sandy Shell and her much anticipated work to the Oromo Community residing in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Veteran OSA scholars Mekuria Bulcha and Guluma Gemeda will join Sandy at at the pre-ASA meeting workshop in Washington DC.  If you can't have enough of Sandy Shell, a 30-persons RSVP-based event that exclusively features Sandy Shell is going to be held at Georgetown University in Washington DC on November 19 from 11-12:30pm prior to  the workshop and the ASA conference. Try to make it by all means. If she comes all the way from South Africa, you can surely make a short metro trip on one of DC's colored lines.

Asebe Regassa,  a new Oromo Studies  face and an independent researcher from Germany, will also be speaking at the ASA conference on the topic of land grabbing in Oromia. Mardaasaa Addisu, a veteran  advocate for Oromo refugee rights is expected to speak on the devastation of environment in Oromia as the leading cause of Oromo migration or exodus out of the land of repression--creating a situation of "out of frying pan into the fire" elsewhere in exile.

Review excerpts from ASA schedule below to see the panels, topics and  panelists representing the Oromo nation and the Horn of Africa at the 56th convention of the African Studies Association.

Oromo: Saving Endangered Species at Home and Abroad

It is rare to come across any other nationality groups like the Oromo from the Horn of Africa who are as subjected to overwhelming abuses at home under subjugation and occupation and overseas as refugees with no safe haven. From destructive events developing at unprecedented rate in Oromia and in countries of exile, we can observe that the Oromo people are facing a greater danger to their survival as a group and as individuals from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia, Yemen to Libya, Somaliland to Kenya and everywhere in between. We hear of increasingly darker and gorier circumstances our people find themselves in every passing day.

The recent crackdown in Saudi Arabia on immigrants and refugees from Oromia and Ethiopia and this Qeerroo report on massive rights abuses inside Oromia from 2012-2013 demonstrate just how much fragile, weak and endangered the Oromo species has become everywhere. The suffering is obviously enormous, but the local and global voices conveying these sufferings are tragically dwindled or hijacked. It behooves every concerned Oromo to pause and think: where are we headed as a people? And it is necessary that every Oromo political and economic organization rethinks home-based, Oromia, approaches to preventing the slow extinction of this species from the face of the earth.

Documenting extreme brutality against Oromian/Ethiopian refugees and immigrant in Saudi Arabia, the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa presents us with 13 confirmed deaths most of whom are expected to be Oromos. Surely the three who were killed brutally were clearly Oromos. The dead are not just numbers coming out of a building somewhere; they are human beings with names, goals, aspirations, families and many other unknown stories just like the rest of us. But, their dreams were cut short in brutal ways they may have never imagined. HRLHA puts the extreme brutality as:

...the information from the migrants and from the publicly released video confirmed that the three Ethiopians killed were murdered by the brutal action of police. Among the victims was Umere Abdurahiman Ali , 24 an Oromo national from Ethiopia who was gunned down on November 5. After the crackdown resumed, more than 10 Ethiopians were killed and thrown into the bush and eaten by hyenas.
These are the number of confirmed deaths. The murders are likely to be higher given the fact that it is commonly reported that people are wantonly taken out of cities and killed out of sight in surrounding deserts. How can they communicate when they are denied access to any type of phone or communication? Denial of access to communication devices is also the main feature of repression behind the closed door at home.

These developments at home and abroad are worth sharing because we have been following them on social media for a few days now. There has been numerous actual protests around the world and tons of information, hate speeches and misinformation shared on social-media under the untwitterly long and opposing hashtags #SomeOneTellSaudiArabia and #SomeoneTellEthiopia. The hashtags are channels for further escalating conflicts online.

One would say any opposition against the abusive actions of Saudi Arabia under whatever banner is welcome, minus hate-based nationalism thing. This is not without reservation. I have my doubts about how things are developing online.

Three Worrisome Trends

1) Endless racist slurs from Saudi Arabian tweeps who are comfortable pictweeting the picture of a banana with  accompanying racist captions such as:

"@TheAdele_#SomeoneTellEthiopia this is a banana. You illegal monkeys like it.
http://twitter.com/TheAdele_/status/402165965355745280/photo/1pic.twitter.com/ISw6BtXCxs "#SomeoneTellSaudiArabi.
The Saudis are vehemently denying that the killings happened and pointing out how "evil" and "criminal" the immigrants were, mostly falsely. Also, KSA police were coercing immigrants to pose for pictures with them to show how "nice" and "warm" people they are. Oil-fattened Saudi hypernationalits share pictures of Saudi police taken handing food and bottled water to immigrants ad nauseam. It is clear there is so much hatred even toward our people who share the same values, names and faith with the Saudis, which failed to spare them, including the ones murdered.

2) The way Ethiopianists are using social media and actual rally opportunities to promote reactionary Ethiopian nationalism, aka preaching unity and "national pride" as if there is one. Ethiopian nationalism and all its symbols from the use of Amharic to the imperial tri-color flag to "we are one" mantras are actually scary if you think about it. Interestingly, it is also non-Oromo Ethiopian tweeps (Twitter users) who are dominating the social media landscape and standing up to Saudi Arabia. That is a plus. Other than the obvious and welcome pro-immigrant advocacy, it is not clear why Habeshas are much more intensely invested in this than any other group. At some of the rallies, Oromo voices and symbols are not visible. Those who are Oromo also tended to use Amharic and call themselves Ethiopians effectively rendering themselves invisible. This raises an additional identity issue and many other questions, which I will pass for now.

3) Ethiopia regime's crackdown on anti-Saudi Arabia protesters in Finfinne instead of leading such a protest as any other legitimate regime would do. The Ethiopian government is not telling the public whether the dead bodies of the 13 above were returned to home to families for burial. This is important given the sacredness attached to the burial customs of our society.

What you see is a pattern of Oromos becoming an endangered and muted human species in exile and in the homeland, Oromia. This path is a path of inevitable extinction. Everybody should be hard pressed to think about the future of the stateless Oromo people and the dangers they face at home and abroad and come up with domestic solutions.

Highlights,Papers of Oromo Participants at African Studies

This is a sequel to the earlier post "Oromo Studies Representation at African Studies Annual Meeting." To show how scholars on the Oromo People and the Horn of Africa are pushing the boundary in the struggle for knowledge production in a world that deliberately suppresses knowledge production for people like us, we have provided the highlights and papers from the African Studies conference.

It's to be remembered that our scholars presented several papers in two panels back to back in Baltimore, Maryland, on  November 23, 2013 . That, of course, was a huge breakthrough.

As you can see from the previous post, the panels were: 1) Past and Present Oromo Diasporas: Experiences, Identities and Achievement; and 2) Oromo on and off the Land."  These topics are in keeping with the ASA conference's theme,"Mobility Migration and Flows." As people who suffer from forced exodus, it was only fitting for Oromo scholars to represent the dwindled Oromo voices and to make their presence felt at the venue. Besides, it's always good to share Oromo-related knowledge with scholars, policy-makers on/of Africa or outsiders. This is outreach and a lot more of it needs to be done in addition to the equally important tradition of preaching to the choir.

Mardaasa Addisu delivered a well-researched paper on the interconnection between the destruction of environment at home, in Oromia, and the forced exodus of Oromo refugees and the multiple crises they face in refugees host nations.    Mardaasa Addisu's paper "Environmental Destruction in Ethiopia: A Leading Factor in Oromo Migration" is available for a free download below:

Several notable presentations were made there, but  the newest, most noteworthy and the most provocative  (in my opinion) research presented by Sandra Shell was dubbed, "The Oromo Children of Lovedale, South Africa: A Prosopography of African Slavery and Its After-Effects." Her paper was based on her thoroughly-researched and approved doctoral dissertation that she submitted to the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Sandra's full original thesis titled "From slavery to freedom: the Oromo Slave Children of Lovedale prosopography and profiles is available online here. Gutama Tarafo, "one of the Oromo boys at Lovedale," and a key source of documents for Sandra's research penned this essay in support of the liberation of Oromo children by the British.

History is important insofar as it reminds us what happened and alerts us to get out of the vicious cycle of slavery our people find themselves in even to this very day. The name of that slavery today might be land grabbing, massive refugee exodus out of Oromia and large-scale persecutions at home and abroad and human-trafficking, but they are still forms of slavery. The crises Oromo face in exile are the crises of statelessness.  More than ever, the Oromo need  to restore their own state where they shall feel safe, protected, free and dignified. Certainly, we can't settle only for great research papers being written and delivered by great scholars to whom we are grateful. We have to wake up to the reality of the continuity of the military occupation and genocidal campaigns in Oromia from Menelik II to Meles Zenawi/Hailemariam Desalegn. We deserve our own declaration of independence not because it is just fancy, but because it is a necessity for our survival.

We will share other papers as we receive them. But so far, we shared one paper from Mardaasa Addisu and accessed and shared Sandra's Shell's thesis from her online archive.

Oromo Press's several attempts to interview Sandy Shell on OPR radio were unsuccessful. We'll try again.

"The Wars Menelik Waged to Unite Ethiopia for Me Is a Holy War," said Twedros Kasahun on the front page of the Amharic  Inku magazine. That is euphemism for saying that the genocide Menelik waged against the Oromo and south to colonize them by expanding the Abyssinian kingdom was a holy war. How can someone in a sane mind call a war that reduced the population of Oromo by one half a holy war or desirable war? Where do this thinking  come from? Are there religious, political, ideological and racist roots of these kinds of hate speeches celebrating the extermination of people come from? Did the TPLF/EPRDF spare the Oromo people from Amhara elites genocide campaigns or has the TPLF/EPRDF inherited the same policy? These talk show attempts to answer these contentious questions and issues in Afaan Oromo. The answers are by no means sufficient to explain the root causes of such genocide-inciting and genocide-celebrating hate speeches from Abyssinian partisan ideologues, celebrities, media and political parties. We invite you to listen. It should be fun if you never listened to a talk show monologue in Afan Oromo before. We are the pioneer of such a platform as far as Oromo media is concerned.

"Are you Habesha?": a Hidden Imposition on Oromian National Identity

$

It was Friday, December 27, 2013 and I was waiting for a taxi in Washington DC to go to the “Oromiyaa Tiyya” concert to watch Oromo national artists Hachalu Hundessa, Jambo Jote, Abush Zeleke and Nigusu Tamirat perform live for the Oromo community in downtown Silver Spring. A gray taxi pulled up to the curb and I got in and told the driver my destination in English. A few minutes into the driving an old cabdriver with a funky hat blurts out in Amharic a seemingly innocuous question:

“Are you Habesha?”

That is a common pestering question many Oromians in diaspora who live in places with large Amhara concentration frequently face. I know you want to hear my response. I responded, “No I am not a Habesha? What is a Habesha?”  The driver could not believe I could not think of myself as a Habesha and pressed me persistently in Amharic to get “Yes I am an Habesha response,” but that was to no avail. When I responded “I am Oromo from Oromia,” the anonymous driver was as infuriated as I was when he asked me the question he did. So, we got even at this point and my response, kind of, switched the man off and gave me the needed break to anticipate the Oromiyaa Tiyya concert and how the night would unfold until 1 a.m.

The trip was so short and I had no time to educate the gentleman on the general tendency of Abyssinian elites and grassroots to impose their form of identity (Habesha) on any Black person or Oromo strangers they meet in the line of their duty.

This is such a common phenomenon that the Oromo people need to know how to respond to the question to dispel the ignorance Abyssinians are fondly holding onto. In the process of rejecting such a misidentification a few processes are important depending on the time and the rationality of the person asking you the loaded question.

Reject that you are not Habesha and say you are “Oromo from Oromia” or just “Oromian.”

Use this one as your favorite switch to turn off some further Habesha curiosities and move on with your day. Know that the Habesha person will try to get into an argument with you when you tell him this truth of your identity, which he/she finds irritating. That is exactly the desired outcome and you should be proud of that. You scored a point towards preserving your cherished eenyummaa.

It is a waste of time to try to educate them since Habeshas are uneducable to easily unlearn the wrong beliefs and hatred they have absorbed for centuries as to which nationality group the word “Habesha” refers to.  But, if you have time and the patience tell them “Habesha” refers to ethnic Amhara and Tigire, and sometimes Guraghe, but not all other ethnonational groups in the Ethiopian empire. In fact, the word “Habesha” is one of the clues into the fact that Abyssinians immigrated from Yemen 1000 years ago, meaning that they had to travel a long distance to come and occupy a territory of indigenous Africans such as the Oromo. This place of origin also indicates the barbaric similarity of Yemen “maxxe” people with the people in the Arabian Peninsula with whom they share a genealogy.   On a superficial level tell them the Oromo and other people of south are not Habesha as they have their own identities, nationality and citizenship of choice.

Distinguish between levels of ideological sophistication of people asking the dreaded question and tailor your responses accordingly, but never hide the truth or take the questions lightly. Amhara elites tend to know that this word represents Abyssinian group and deliberately use it to distort and confuse the identities of the Oromo and the south. It is a very coercive question if asked in a context of repression in Ethiopia. The Abyssinian intent behind this is to make Oromo and others to deny who they are whenever and wherever Habeshas can. The taxi driver falls in the category of Abyssinian everyday persons brainwashed by their elites into believing that everyone in Ethiopia and everyone with a black skin is “Habesha.” Average Joes and Janes wearing jingoistic nationalistic Habesha T-shirts and jerseys (masks) are also victims of the same ideological mobilization. On the top layer, of course, you will find hate-mongers and Abyssinian supremacists like Mesfin Weldemariyam,Getachew Haile, Berhanu Nega or Andargachew Tsige, for example, who make sure to confuse their own Amhara clans from Yemen with the blanket use of the term “Habesha” on other who are not. Habesha comes from the time when Abyssinians flocked to the Horn of Africa hungry and thirsty on camels back with their Arab incense, which they continue to use as airfreshners and as a tool of charming some evil spirits in churches now.

Of course, one of the identifying markers of being Habesha is speaking Amharic and being Ethiopian. Since you are not both if you are from Oromia, Ogaden-Somali, SNNP, Afar, Gambella, Benishangul, you should just go ahead and use either Afan Oromo or English when responding to such questions. By refusing to speak Amharic even when you know it, you will teach Habesha persons that you have no obligation to speak their language and accept the fictitious version of identity while they don’t want to speak your language.  Imagine what impact boycotting speaking Amharic in rural and urban Oromia and other regions will have on the Abyssinians—it will be immense. Perhaps, the next step is to boycott Amharic in Oromia along with Bedele and Heinken beer products.

When you have finished the task of rejecting that you’re a Habesha and asserting that you are Oromian, then forget the silly question and enjoy your Oromo music and culture be it “Oromiyaa Tiyya” concert or other  new year's events.

 Happy new year!!

Ever-increasing Crimes of TPLF/EPRDF Brutal Regime in Oromia

By Getinet Dinkayehu

The continuous arrests, detention, torture and disappearance of people in Oromia should indeed be a cause for concern to every Oromo people living in the country and abroad. The past 22 years have been the most painful period in Oromia. A week hardly passes without someone being picked up and detained by the TPLF security agents for one unexplained reason or another. The last couple of weeks, I have received a lot of messages from Oromo nationalists residing in western parts of Oromia through my emails, whom  I preferred not to mention their names here because of their security. Here is the message I received from one friend in “Afaan Oromo” and I wanted to put it in English as follows; “I am in deep tensions and annoyed because of the case associated with my family. My father was a respected businessman in our local area. Now about two weeks passed since my father left his home and his whereabouts still unknown. Following his disappearance the TPLF Trojan horse better known as OPDO imprisoned one of my family members coercing to reveal where my father is. What I knows about my father is, after he openly started criticizing the evil doings of the TPLF led Ethiopian regime and the puppet OPDOs on different public meetings; he was continually harassed and even received several death threats, including death threats to the entire family. He was arrested at different times suspected of being a member of OLF  without due legal process and without family visitations, tortured and interrogated at gunpoint to reveal the alleged agents he was working with for OLF. The reason why he was mainly targeted as criminal and went to jail at different times is not because he was a criminal or has  done anything wrong against anybody, but only because he protested that why his Oromo brothers and sisters were cold-bloodedly killed by TPLF securities without any reasons and because he protested against the widespread injustices being committed by the regime agents in Oromia. When my father was in woyanes secret detention center, the inhuman treatments he experienced at the hand of the torturers were horrible and even some part of his face was disfigured because of the massive tortures”.

Indeed this is a daily practice of the regime against many Oromo on a  wider scale. I personally know many Oromos; outstanding students, teachers, businessmen who were unlawfully detained by woyane securities or disappeared and their families are not informed of their whereabouts.

The most worrisome situation still going in various parts of western Oromia is that people are always branded as criminals and unlawfully detained only for being an Oromo and alleged association with the OLF or sympathizing with Oromo opposition political organizations. Despite the lack of any evidence against those people, the security agents continuously torture them in secret detention centers. Also, other friends from the same area said thatpicking up  people at night and taking them to prison is still a daily practice of woyane securities. Imagine sitting with your family waiting to have the dinner only to receive a knock on your door that you are wanted for questioning. You are then whisked away from your beloved family without anyone knowing your whereabouts, condition of detention or what crime you might have committed. This is exactly what peoples in many parts of Oromia still going through. Many people disappeared or been killed in a very systematic way simply because they exercised their fundamental rights. Diverting the mobile phone to their security forces and Internet censorships are being practiced on many people. The current human rights situation in western Oromia is terrible and repugnant. There is woyanes rule that does not tolerate any form of criticism in the area at all. Even the very slightest criticism of the government in the area could land a person in jail and to be charged with terrorism or “shororkeessumma”(in puppet OPDO definition). Now this situation is highly forcing people to live under great fear and uncertainties than ever. It has become normal for the people in western Oromia to simply disappear into thin air; especially those who dare to criticize the government or who are reported by their adversaries to the regime securities.

It is very annoying when the TPLF minority led regime blatantly continues through its security forces to unlawfully arrest and detain anybody they perceive as an opponent. To add insult to injury, most of the detainees are seldom informed of their rights and/or reason for their arrest or detention and are often held beyond the time limit without charge contrary to the edicts of the so-called constitution. Several productive youths are running away to escape the difficult life that controlled the area. Activism for democracy, human rights and justice are being met with secret killings, torture, arbitrary arrests and detention. The wanton criminal acts of  TPLF security or “Dehninet” against the Oromo is aimed at spreading state-terrorism among the public who sees someone get arrested or killed.  Some remain silenced because they are afraid for their lives to speak up against what ongoing injustice unleashed by occupying TPLF soldiers.

We have seen that at the beginning of this year in January 2014, when people on the world joyfully celebrated the New Year and wished peace, security improvements and prosperity to their own people. In contrarycontrary the Ethiopian Federal Court gave a prison sentence to 45 people. most of those sentenced are Oromo nationalist political prisoners sentenced to three to twelve years in prison. Without committing any crime against anybody, they were unlawfully arrested in 2010 and were accused of being members or sympathizers of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). This alone can publically tell that TPLF/EPRDF regime has totally cracked down on political freedoms and continued committing widespread human rights violations with total impunity. Ethiopia today isthe only country where the government publically labeled genuine dissidents as “terrorists” and “criminals”  throws throws them intothe worst kept secret killing fields. The EPRDF regime is the the most politically intolerant regime in Africa. It is a horror empire  where the rule of law, good governance and the sanctity of human life are alien concepts. It is the country where torture, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial executions, detention without trial, statutory murder and extra-judicial convictions have become officially deep-rooted as normal governance practices and intensifies its containment of democracy each day, and rules strictly through the instrument of paralyzing fear and the practice of brutality against ordinary citizens.

We have seen that when told the reality of Oromo, they call it anti-national unity or terrorism. For long we have seen that the TPLF owned-media  distort the truth of Oromos for their own cause. For long we have seen that their media created false and fabricated stories on Oromo nationalists. For long we have seen that several Oromo nationalists who have been  unlawfully detained and are languishing in prisons. The Oromo are  denied justice by TPLF court judges who were hired by a regime whose sole aim is to brutalize, torture and silence anybody against their tyrannical style of governance. For so long we have seen that many innocent people unjustly sentenced to life term and death.

The TPLF minority is all the leaders of the executive, the legislative, judiciary and military branch of government. Their words words are final and anyone who goes against their authority is doomed. They are all the lawmen’s, the judges, the jury and the executives. They act as the ‘Creators’ of the peoples in Ethiopia. They decide who walks freely or shackled in jail, who live, who work and/or dies. Judges are hired and fired by the TPLF cadres without any explanations. They owe their entire livelihoods to them and they determine who comes before these judges and the sentences they receive. Now, getting justice for Oromos in Ethiopia under TPLF is compared to hunting for a dinosaur in this day and age. It is very dangerous for the people when a single party members from one minority group has all such powers and even more dangerous if there is no accountability and no limit to these powers. No single party or leaders should have absolute power to run nations single- handily and with iron fist.

What is the future for Oromos?  Will there be any conductive environment where all Oromo people will be free from such kinds of fear, intimidation, torture, arrest and humiliation to express their legitimate rights and fundamental human rights, which remain unthinkable under TPLF gangs?  No  Oromo family, groups and businesses can count themselves safe from persecution, arrest, humiliation, detention without trial and torture under this brutal regime. We Oromos should be brave enough to come out from every corner and fight against the ever- worsening injustices that continue to bedevil our motherland. Everyone, irrespective of party or group, is duty-bound to act. In our journey to demand our freedom, we must be ready to use every avenue.  The injustices meted on us are enough.

We should not  expect the westerners to bring about the change we are seeking  in our Land; It’s we Oromians who have to come together under one umbrella  with a sole purpose of eradicating dictators and liberating our people and country, Oromia. We might not be united in the same political party, but we should be united in the same course in fighting dictatorship. Look at the likes of Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. It’s the voices of the people that brought about change from the streets of Tunis to Tripoli to Benghazi and from the Cairo to Alexandria. It has come to a point in which we also need to do everything  to get our freedom. For any meaningful political change to take place, the people must take it upon themselves to effect the change. As a result, we must not expect that an angel will descend from heaven and liberate us from dictators. But the onus of liberating Oromia from oppression is every Oromians’obligation.

Fellow Oromians, Let us ask ourselves these simple questions. With logic, we understand how our people are dying in silence.

Why does TPLF-led Ethiopian regime mainly targets Oromo people, intellectuals, businessmen, teachers, university students, artists and entrepreneurs?

Why are many Oromos arrested and detained without genuine reasons on a daily basis?

Why are many Oromos missing and their whereabouts remain unknown by their family and loved  ones?

Why do tens of thousands ofOromos  still languishin jail without trial or why have they had their trials delayed?

Why were countless Oromo nationalists  shot dead in their homes and in public by occupying TPLF securities?

Why have countless Oromo  been fired from their jobs and schools for no apparent reasons?

Why are Oromo  lands and properties  seized and looted from Oromos under this regime?

Why do countless Oromos flee  TPLF/EPRDF persecution daily and and suffer in neighboring countries and dying in deserts?

How on earth can one be sentenced to life in prison  or death penalty only for demanding his freedom without committing any crime against anybody?

Tsunamis of Human right violations of the above are well documented and are available online.

Do we as a people only have to speak the truth and or condemn injustice only when it affects us directly and or personally? This is a question that I am posing to some people who are in a position of this regime today. To those dummy OPDO leaders who continue to carry out TPLF’s dirty works be warned that you will all be going down with them. The world is now a global village and war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by any person or party will never go free. The choice is yours.

To those who think they have no say or voice on the atrocities committed against our people,  learn from Martin Luther King Jr.: “In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Oromia is under muted and bleeding by this evil regime. If we see injustice and remain silent, we have sided with evil. We have seen that killing Oromo is the trade mark of this regime. These killings are not spontaneous or accidental they are done intentionally to silence the whole people.

Therefore, to prevent further injustice and sufferings, there needs to be a collective response to the giant atrocities in Oromia. We all have a duty to ensure that we free our land from TPLF/EPRDF dictatorship.  This should be done with united front and sincere commitments. I hope the sooner we all look at freedom as an inherent human right that is a prerequisite for any society to progress, and not as a “gift” to be given only the ruling minority, the sooner we will face this challenge as one nation UNITED to end  tyranny!  Oppression cannot stand forever, and it shall be replaced with freedom.

So, fellow Oromians at home and diaspora, let us all rise up in unison march against this brutal regime and fight for our freedom and for the freedom of all Oromo political prisoners who are inhumanely suffering in Ethiopia.

Victory for oppressed people of Oromia!

Oromia's Media Launches: Petty Power Struggles Behind the Scene

Regardless of the bombastic speeches and the feverish media launching campaigns over the last few months, the two Oromo media groups launched recently are fraught with fundamental problems and contradictions from the start.  The fact that they are two itself speaks volumes to why they are two: the founders and other members could not get along on basic issues to create one robust media network of national significance, color-blinded to cherry-picking board members and executive committee members undemocratically.

Observers/insiders say that the leadership of the two media groups are the "YES MEN/WOMEN" of single individuals  maneuvering behind the scene  and forcing qualified people to resign and deleting some outspoken and critical members from conference calls, email listservs, close-friends' meetings and so on. The process is completely scandalous and laughable for people purportedly engaged in the liberation of Oromia.  Add to the mix of the controversy many embarrassing on-air errors, which could have been prevented if there were proper labor division between "journalists" and technicians. Parts of the broadcast sounded like police officers talking on walkie talkies or the so-called reporters were completely camera-shy and unable to project their voices on air.

In short, the founding process as well as the recruiting process lacked transparency and accountability to the public. Accountability to the public means the pubic will be empowered to participate in the elections of the leaders of such media groups. But, the public was made to participate only in clapping, copycat standing ovations, and donating its hard-earned currency.  Accountability also means that the public is clearly shown registration documents  so they can  see for themselves if the media groups are someone's start-up corporations or  public media.

If they have nothing to hide, they can go ahead and do these now too. If they have a lot to hide, the secrecy shall continue and these groups will become mouthpieces of few individuals and their cronies who will become journalists, guests (interviewees) and leaders of the groups at the same time.

These media groups call themselves, "public service broadcasters" and openly solicit donations and membership fees from the general Oromo public who have no idea under whose name these groups are registered legally. Fundamentally they are private companies of Mr X and Y operating under the guise of "public media." The trustees of a public media are  supposed to be elected from the public at a general assembly of such a public, yet this process was not seen in action. What we saw was unknown individuals showing up on the list of founding members or board members. Professionals who contributed/wrote journalistic principles  were excluded and sidelined from both groups.

The power struggles between individuals in Madda Walaabuu Media Foundation (MWMF) and Oromia Media Network (OMN) are often said to be based on differences in political philosophy, but in reality egocentric divisions resulted in the establishment of two media organizations that beg money from the same members of the public adnauseam

At one point, MWMF called a meeting and invited people from OMN. Two big-shot OMN participants at the meeting walked out of the meeting after bitter disagreements. Then later, a rift occurred in the leadership of OMN due to the secrecy with which something meant for public was being mishandled.

The rift resulted in the pre-launch firing of several talented  individuals who have solid credentials in journalism and media. The power struggles have continued via social media posts on Facebook. The fallout attracted Abyssinian commentators who rejoiced about the issue with celebratory blog posts.

The leaderships of the two media groups are intimidated by individuals who are qualified to do the job of  professional journalism and communications. They were not looking for talents or skills, but for "Yes Persons" who would fall in line and be part of the personality cult that surrounds both these media initiatives.  What the public sees are the hypes on the stage, not behind-the- scene power struggles and egocentric desires to dominate and be seen as the single most important person for founding a media group.

Some would make excuses for these major divisions by citing "survival of the fittest" principles. "Oh let's watch them and let people follow the winner." Such excuses are weaknesses blinding people from seeing that people are not able to work together even on relatively small projects such as setting up one media network with branches everywhere.

The two media have already put out some pseudo news content for the public, but in terms of the quality of content the public is left with substandard content that place emphasis on regionally irrelevant international reports and deaths and flights of OPDO figures. Fair and balanced doesn't mean not doing research, not interviewing Oromians on the ground. If you want a content based only on translation, VOA Afan Oromo would have sufficed. There is a need for doing real reporting, creativity, boldness and putting skills at work.

There is a need for learning the value of cooperation as opposed disintegration. Part of the shoddy content we see is because these media groups are run by untrained or unqualified citizen journalists who have big confidence, but lack the skills. The era of sweeping important things under the rug is long gone.  The public needs to know the facts moving forward.
