Images of Ethiopian Forces in Western Media: War-makers as Peacemakers and Containers of Ethnic Clashes in Moyale

$

Reading news about Western media reports of the ethnic clashes in Moyale, a border area between southern Oromia-Ethiopia and Kenya, one cannot avoid noticing the conspicuous wrong framing of the "Ethiopian National Defense Forces" as 'containers and peacemakers.' These kinds of  narrative projections of a strong Ethiopia  plays and replays the age-old predominant, but flawed Western views of the Ethiopian state and ruling elites as dependable champions of stability, counter-terrorism and so forth in Ethiopia and the Horn.

Media outlets such as the BBC, CBS, and the VOA have rushed to  giving all sorts of dangerous credits to the ENDF as a stabilizing force. This is problematic not only for ignoring the composition of the ENDF,  a military force dominated by ethnic Tigire officers and commanders, but also because it makes it difficult for groups suffering massive human rights violations under the current ethno-apartheid regime such as the Oromo and  Ogaden to tell their stories. It makes it an uphill battle for us to prove our just causes for freedom, self-rule, democracy and all other basic human needs.

Our Ethiopianist friends opposed to the regime will be happy to see such international headlines on ethnic clashes since they affirm their "one-Ethiopia" narrative that the current ethnic federalism is not working. Yes, federalism is not working currently. But, the reason clashes happen is not inherently because of ethnic federalism,  but because the regime follows an outdated colonial policy of divide and conquer in Ethiopia--this has nothing to do with federalism or  the sacred article 39 and why they are not working.

What is shocking in this coverage is how the reports are hardly victim-centered. The reports portray the Ethiopian forces as "containers" and "stabilizers", while most people in the Horn of Africa and Ethiopia know that this is not true at all. In fact, many of the Horn and the Oromian-Ethiopian populations groups know that Ethiopia is behind every major wars  (or inter-state) or ethnic  clashes such as the one that  just caused the deaths of tens of peoples and the displacement of 30,000 members of the affected communities. The framing of the ENDF as "the stabilizing force" hides the fact that the very same force is a force of instability engineered to uphold the mono-ethnic apartheid system in Ethiopia.

Have you ever seen reports in major international news media about the massive human rights abuses and crimes against humanity that have been committed by these forces over the last twenty-one years in major Western media such as CBS, BBC, the VOA, where the West has sided with the peoples/civilians who suffer the most? The story of the civilians who suffer the most are reduced to nothing more than numbers here. In contrast, the  ENDF forces are qualified and elaborately described to the levels of saintly "containers" of the so-called ethnic clashes! Oops!

The reality is that the regime wants instability at any cost in order to thrive by depicting itself or by getting depicted by the West as a "peacekeeper" nationally and regionally. Instability and terrorism will never go way from the Horn unless the current authoritarian regime is dismantled or unless serious changes are bought about by any means possible. How can an authoritarian-terrorist regime stamp out terrorism where it does not exist? Isn't terrorism the regime's main money-legitimacy maker even in places like Somalia?

One of the most important areas of engagement for the Oromo and other Ethiopian diaspora media networks is to try to expose such false framing by correctly portraying the Ethiopian regime as a war-maker, which it truly is. Calling a spade a spade is likely to hasten our common search for a just and equitable system. The effect of shoddy framing is overwhelming because such framing colonizes the minds of Western audience exposed to it, making it difficult for pro-peace, human rights, freedom, democracy and and stability forces who are contending with the narrowly-based government of Ethiopia.

It is profoundly unprofessional and unethical for these news media to strip the Ethiopian regimes forces of self-interest and to portray them  as "objective interveners" who are out to contain instability.  Most peripheral areas of Oromia, including, Moyale, have seen several large-scale inter-ethnic clashes sponsored by the Ethiopian government itself who shows up last-minute to proclaim that they have contained the situations. The only time you see officials act is when they get on the phone to give international interviews, not when they prevent or stop violence.  These clashes happened countless times in the past. If the Ethiopian regime is a real container and, not the one fomenting inter-ethnic strife, why has it never played preventative roles so far? Why did it have to wait for weeks and months until tens are killed and 30,000 are displaced internally and externally? Does the regime care since  the affected populations are not  co-ethnics with the ruling group? Why don't these media tell us the missing important perspectives?  These are tough questions for which there are no easy answers. Always what is omitted is more important than what is reported in Western media about Oromia-Ethiopia.

It is obvious that in these areas  a diverse mix of state  and non-state armed forces operate. The region is literally a  salad bowl of armed forces such as:  simple unidentified militias and bandits and profiteers of violence,  and serious armed rebels opposing Ethiopia such as  the Oromo Liberation Army and the Ogaden National Liberation Army, and the ENDF and the Kenyan army.

Framings such as Ethiopian forces contain deadly tribal clash by CBS  and similar others by the BBC and  the VOA play the role of legitimizing the makers of war as "peacemakers" and "containers". The discourse normalizes the very fascist regime as a humanitarian-type on par with Western states who claim interventions on benevolent grounds. Mostly the sources of such lopsided frames are high-ranking Ethiopian government officials, and at rarer times humanitarian organizations such as the Red Cross/Crescent. The victims are never adequately interviewed for their experience of the violence and displacement and what they think the causes are. People bleeding and dying or dead persons are not presented in pictures. People have personal stories to tell--some surely lost loved ones such as sons, daughters, husbands, relatives, property, connections to the homeland (qee'ee abbaa) classmates and so on. These media have denied them that opportunity to tell those personal  heart-rending stories. None of those are told. All we partially know is numbers. Don't Western media rush to obtain victims' testimonies in the West even over superficial incidents such as extreme  hot or cold temperatures? Why can't they do this when it is Africans who suffer on large-scale? When it is us, they present stories conveniently  by drawing on stereotypical Western images of doomed 'tribalism' and 'ethnicity'.

Simplified causes are always mouthed by government officials who are the main party to the protracted conflicts in Oromia.   Legitimizing official narratives on "Ethiopia as container", the VOA cites Bereket Simon, an Ethiopian government spokesman, as saying:
Government spokesman Bereket told the French news agency the federal police intervened and the situation is now under control.

And  CBS cites another EPRDF government official:
Mesfin Assefa, an official in the Oromia region, said Sunday that federal and local forces restored order and that fighting has stopped. Fighting between the Borana and Garri tribes has broken out over the last week.
These reports are not about the victims who have suffered massive dislocations and deaths over the last twenty-one years. They are all about building an image of a fragile pro-Western regime, which faces serious challenges from opponents at a time when the country's President (PM) is absent from public life either because he is seriously sick or dead. Framing is all about dirty words such as "stability", not about peoples or human lives.

Some people would like to think that information from blogs are less reliable than from the conventional news outlets such as CBS, BBC, and  VOA, but the truth is that some  blogs such as Oromo Press are better  than these media outlets in  telling citizens and subjects  what is truly going on in this most abandoned  and ravaged part of the world.

Waaqeffannaa: Sirba Irreechaa Haaraa Amartii Waariitiin

Irreecha: Oromia's Festival for National and Global Interfaith Harmony

$

It is Birraa (Fall) season and Oromos worldwide are celebrating something more than a changing of season. Why? Because it is a concerted act of thanking ONE GOD, of the African indigenous religion type.

  Reasons Irreecha Pulls Us Together

1. Integration of followers of various faiths

To say Irreecha is a uniting force for all Oromos from all faiths is just a restatement of the obvious. Irreecha spiritually integrates everyone and everything: the young, the old, male and female Muslims, Waaqeffataas,  Christians, water and animals.

It easy to notice throngs of pilgrims to holy places like Hora Arsadi in Bushoftu town, southeast of Finfinne. People come from all kinds of faiths, but they submit to their Oromo faith, Waaqeffannaa, at least for a day.

 2. Irreechaa is global

Irreechaa is colorfully celebrated from Oromia to Washington D.C. to Toronto , and other places in Africa.

 3. The cultural outfits represent the diversity/richness of Oromia's spirit of extraordinary creativity.

 4. The rituals performed are the direct outgrowth of Waaqeffannaa

Waqeffannaa is a banned religion by Ethiopian regime. Civil society organizations like the Macha and Tulama Association have applied for the registration of Waaqeffannaa as a national religion, but Waaqeffannaa is still denied legal personality and a place in Ethiopian calendar of holidays. Of course,  this is against  the will of millions of its followers. The fact that this pious national festival happen every year is testament to the Oromo people's resilience and resistance in the face of massive state-sponsored violations on religious freedoms and basic human rights. In Oromia, Oromos celebrate IRREECHA  under the gaze and harassment  from the heavily-armed Ethiopian government troops and police.

UN General Assembly Debates versus Conflict Resolution in the Horn of Africa-- EXPANDED Version

$
0
0

The the conflict in Syria, the tragic murder of the  U.S. ambassador in Libya and unrest relating to the anti-Islam video have overshadowed talks about any other conflict issues in sub-Saharan Africa in the 67th United Nations General Assembly. Even if prioritizing conflict resolution is not going to be translated into actions, it is a progress that  the UN is trying to be proactive in conflict resolution and preventive diplomacy in some privileged  war-ridden regions of the world. Less privileged conflict regions such as the Horn and sub-Saharan Africa are not on the agenda explicitly.

Beyond the UNGA's being  the show of government leaders with levers of power, what are the implications of the such broad and appealing agenda for peace for the Oromo people and others in Ethiopia fighting for rights, equality and self-governance?

Bloggers at Oromo Press have tweeted about the travel of the "New" Ethiopian Prime Minster Hailemariam Desalegn to New York to attend the UN plenary meetings and other specific regional meeting focusing on Somalia and the the Horn of Africa. Hashtags targeting "Oromo", "UNGA", "Ethiopia" were used as ways of getting the conversations picked up globally by those who search twitter on the UNGA and Ethiopia. This is not to chronicle the life and travel of Ato Hailemariam Desalegn,  as some among us have chronicled the death of Meles Zenawi in more detail than Tigireans themselves have done, but to point out how he does not have agenda for peace, conflict resolution and preventative diplomacy for the Oromo and the rest in Ethiopia and the Horn. This is to say that he is a messenger of war, but not of peace.

The EPRDF is trying to sell a line of propaganda that roughly attempts to advertise  post-Zenawi Ethiopia  as "a New Ethiopia," meaning no more dictatorship since  the empire has a new unelected PM hailing from the minority Walayita people. "New Ethiopia" is a fabrication  because the death of one tyrant just led to the replacement by another in a completely intact Ethiopian state system--still mono-ethnically controlled by Tigirean elites.  Hailemariam Desalign is a great opportunity for these all-powerful elites who control the army and the resources of the nation. The idea/plan is to use him as the Trojan Horse to continue attacking the  long disfranchised and abused Oromo and others peoples of the south. The idea  is also to deny that it is not the Tigreans who are doing massive rights abuses and genocidal campaigns  any more. "Look it is somebody else in power!" kind of responsibility dodging!

Given that the agenda at the UN is mostly focused on the Middle East and southeast Asia, neither Hailemariam Desalegn nor sub-Saharan Africa will be featured as important in the so-called GA debates. They are more like agenda-setting speeches than debates. However, Desalegn will still have the opportunity to hoodwink the world since he is from the Horn of Africa, a region that obviously receives relatively higher attention compared to the rest of Africa.

The catch words and phrases are that he is going to continue to play and sell himself as "the new linchpin" against Islamic extremism in the region. In so doing, he will become the the resurrected ghost of Zenawi in the eyes of the West. He is continuing repressive measures against the growing demand for religious rights and autonomy by Ethiopian Muslims.  Like his predecessor did,   he will sternly misrepresent legitimate Muslim grievances as  an incitement to Islamic extremism or may even dub it "terrorism".  The state-controlled Ethiopian Television signposted that the  unknown PM  is participating in the UN GA in a way that extends the national and regional legacies and policies of  the late dictator Meles Zenawi. Ato Desalegn will try to take the fame the international community manufactured for Zenawi for himself and wear it like  a traditional Habesha "Shemma" garment  or debelo  for the same purpose--of promoting one-party and mono-ethnic group hegemony and apartheid in a fundamentally multinational setting. This soaring Tigirean arrogance have squashed the religious and ethnonational  diversity of the nation over the last 21 years and the situation won't be any different under the rookie dictator.

Making a speech at the GA plenary and attending a special meeting on current developments in Somalia will be some of the "To Dos" that  Hailemariam Desalegn has to attend to. Somalia continues to be a bargaining chip for a continued Western-funded dictatorship and rights abuses against the Oromo and others one more time by the  new Trojan Horse. The regime will mean more rape for women and girls, more political prisoners, the dispersion of and separation of families, more wars and evictions of farmers, more internally displaced peoples and more strife and mourning. It will never mean more development and stability unless a broad-based reform or revolution takes place involving large populations like the Oromo and south.

Apart from the fact that this can be a completely overwhelming first international appearance for the rookie tyrant, it highlights the continuation of the same old war and conflict policies in Oromia, Ogaden and the south by the ruling TPLF/EPRDF party; this time  by using a Waliyita man as a protective glove against the bloodshed.  His goal is to deny these wars and conflicts exist contrary to the UN's agenda this year. The injustices and the inequalities will continue despite the local woes. His main task is also to bolster the image of the ruling Tigrean-dominated regime as a "pro-democracy, peace, development" government.  He will sell Ethiopia as steadfast and mindless Western ally on counter-terrorism in the Horn of Africa. He demonstrated this with statements he made on the  UN Mini Summit on Somalia, reiterating that Ethiopia will continue its traditional bullying role in the region.

By posing as a mediator (an intervener)  in the remaining conflicts between Sudan and South Sudan, Ethiopia is seeking its own legitimacy. Somalia and Sudan directly play  roles of legitimating Ethiopia-cum-Tigire  elites who act as "mediators" and "regional peacekeepers"--much like wolf in sheep's clothing. Nothing is  inherently wrong with mediating conflicts , but the problem is that Ethiopia has its own ongoing intrastate armed conflicts with the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and the Ogaden Liberation Front (ONLF),  and a dozen of smaller other rebellions that it has been actively hiding from the international community or misrepresenting these movements as "terrorists" or "narrow nationalisms". The reality is that OLF, ONLF, and Ginbot7 were pushed out of peaceful politics by  the very intolerant Tigire People's Liberation Front (TPLF) at various times.

It does not make any sense that Ethiopia tries to solve other countries' problems while  peoples inside its own territory suffer protracted ethnonational conflicts as much as peoples in Darfur, South Sudan and Somalia. The only difference is the conflicts in Ethiopia have not been given enough international attention since the elites are helping out in the war on terrorism in the region. In exchange, they obviously get the silence from major donors who deny they don't have leverage over Ethiopia.

The likely scenario of frustrating the masses  in conflict regions such as Oromia,Gambella,  SNNP, Ogaden, Amara and  Afrar will be an inevitable  ugly break-up of Ethiopia like former Yugoslavia. Then, situations will be out  of control for the UN or the African Union, especially if the minority government carries out an all-out genocidal violence against others in the south and the rebels try to counter that in order to protect their populations. Without exaggerating, the Rwanda genocide situation can not be ruled out in Oromia-Ethiopia if things continue on the current path. There is no reason to believe this won't happen because the minority-controlled Ethiopian state is fragile, hyperparanoid, hyperfearful and insecure as ever. Fear and the perception of the inability to control the state as  the private property of Tigrean elites will ignite the "landmine". Tigreans elites are  not willing to give up power or resources to the rest of nation, which have been fueling violence and counter-violence.

It is foolish and reckless to start conflict resolution in Ethiopia 40 years later when everything is torn beyond repair or when some people are wiped off the map. 21 years have already lapsed without a modicum of peace, thanks to the complicity of the international community in conflicts in Ethiopia.

Imagine how many lives could have been saved and how much property could have been saved from senseless destruction if Somalia were to get its acts together much earlier than now. Now,  most Somali warring actors seem to  have given up on violence not because they desire peace, but because Somalian civilians have had enough of the violence. It seems that violence has little  following from Somalian civilians anymore. They belatedly learned it is not a sustainable path.  Do we want to go that path in Ethiopia? The right thing to do is to hold the international community to its own words on conflict prevention and to pressure the Tigire elites to give in to some sort of negotiation. Of course, that requires multi-pronged domestic struggles and coalitions against injustice and mono-ethnic apartheid system, where the faces of the oppressors and the oppressed are both black and hard to tell apart for outsiders. That does not make it less of an apartheid nevertheless. It just means that the similarity of skins have masked the differences and the sufferings of some.

It would be easy for Hailemariam Desalegn  to settle into this status quo defense role because he is already being given covers by the USAID, the U.S., and even by the Secretary General of the UN.  Rajashah on behalf of the  USAID has already tweeted this about Ethiopia and Kenya: "  and  have real plans and structures to help communities combat vulnerability to crisis  ",  this time last year we were responding to the worst drought in 60 years in  of   "  Real plans? What are you talking about man?

These kinds of  dangerous view from the aid industry deserves:  "...Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots." In our case, the garb is the international commentators' acts of unfairly tramping on  the freedoms and the well-being of the large masses of Ethiopia's oppressed south, including the Oromo.

Certainly, Hailemarima Desalegn will simply exploit the language/script of development by building on and extending the preexisting   propaganda developments plans such as the "Growth and Transformation Plan" (GTP) and the Hidase Gidib mantra and so on.  His speech would be just a version of ETV propaganda on the global stage in front of like-minded dictators, without the booing.  He will also receive condolences for Meles Zenawi from others leaders that he will convey to his ghost bosses who have real power when he returns.

So, the debate over conflict resolution and preventative diplomacy  at the UNGA may not mean anything for the people of the Horn in general and for those in Oromia and Ethiopia who are sick and  tired of their leaders talking down to them from higher places. Unfortunately, the talkers will talk and the wars shall continue against the will of the vast majority of peoples.

Hailemariam Desalign will achieve his goal of seeking legitimacy for himself and for ethnic Tigire elites. They will use him as a Torjan Horse against the Oromo and the south, at lest until the end of the late Zenawi's term of office in 2015. If indeed he won't have his own independent thinking and decision-making ability as opposed to Zenawi, this man could prove even more dangerous for  the Oromo and others. This can be so if he can be manipulated at any instruction from the generals and others in the TPLF. That time will tell.

What are important in talking up or writing up about this high-level meetings are not really about expecting any changes in the global order, which won't happen unless the citizens of the world demand it fiercely for the sake of peace and human security. It is to show how  important it is that we engage on new media technologies such as Twitter, with  targeted and professional tweeting like the following done by volunteer bloggers at Oromo Press:

Is Regime Troops' Crackdown on Oromo at Irreecha Festival 'Ethiopian Apartheid Policy' or 'Law Enforcement?'

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, several million Oromos gathered at Bushoftu's Hora Arsaddii in Central Oromia, southeast of Finfinne to celebrate Irrecha, a national “Thanksgiving” holiday. Of the millions, Ethiopian-cum-Tigire security forces arrested 150 to 200 Oromo persons of all ages and gender and jailed them in Mai'ikelawi (a torture prison in Finfinne) and at other unknown places. The violent mass arrests were accompanied by dehumanizing activities by the "Ethiopian" army and police. Women, girls and men were stripped naked in public of cultural costumes at gunpoint.

The mass arrests and harassments are part of the apartheid policy Ethiopian regimes have followed towards the Oromo people. Apartheid here stands for a system of legal ethno-racial  segregation extended and enforced by the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front party (EPRDF) since 1991.

In fact, Abyssinian apartheid policy was not created just in 1991. A state-led apartheid policy against Oromos have been in place as a part of the Abyssinian colonial policy since Oromia fell under settler colonialism (nafxanyaa-gabbar system) since the last quarter of the 19th century in most places, and longer in Walloo and northern Oromia. The EPRDF perfected a preexisting discriminatory policy against the Oromo that it inherited from the Amahara ruling elites.

The EPRDF was created to protect the interests of Tigreans and to systematically violate the interests of members of other major nationalities such as the Oromo.  The EPRDF itself, and its satellite Oromo People's Democratic Organization (OPDO), are  manifestations of this apartheid policy since they were created to alienate and attack legitimate and popular Oromo forces such as the Oromo Liberation Front  in order to marginalize and suppress the big Oromo question of national self-determination, including withdrawal from the Ethiopian state system, which has never served the interests of the vast majority of Oromos--rural or urban.

A lot has been reported on the phenomenon collective arrests in Bushoftu. I am not here to repeat the news, but to put it in perspective. The questions that is rarely asked about recurring yearly crackdown against Oromos based on their identity--Oromo ethnicity, religion, culture, language and clothing articles-- is whether these brutal actions are just accidents of human rights violations or whether they are the continuation of Ethiopian apartheid policy against Oromo bodies, minds and cultures.

At Irreecha,  Ethiopian security forces interpreted Oromo cultural outfits as "symbols of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)" or symbols of "the enemy." It is wildly crazy that the culture of a whole group of people is equated to OLF to justify attacks.

The fact that mass arrests repeatedly occur during Oromo holidays, but do not occur at all during Habesha holidays such as Meskel and Timket, show the current Ethiopian regime, as past ones, follows an apartheid policy against the Oromo people in all spheres of life, including areas of religion, culture, economy and the right to exist.

There were not any collective or individual arrests carried out against members of the ruling ethno-national groups from the Tigire and Amahara during the Habesha new year, and Meskel celebrations just prior to the Oromo's Irreecha. Abyssinians freely exercise their collective festivals and celebrations because they own the state.

The crackdown at Irreechaa 2012 in Oromia is not a just a mere government interference with Oromian national events, but it is a systematic apartheid policy. Stripping Oromo women and girls naked in public, sending several hundreds to jail , beating festival-goers with batons, infiltrating the holy site at Arsaddii and policing what kinds of songs the youth sang are premeditated actions that were centrally planned by Ethiopia's notorious National Security and Intel Service (NSIS).

The so-called federal police, conventional troops and Oromia Police were deployed in tens of thousands to terrorize Oromo unarmed civilians. Does such a discrimination happen to Tigreans or Amara when they celebrate their holidays in Finfinne (right in the heart of Oromia) or Mekele? Not at all. They celebrate in complete joy, while Oromos attempt to have just one happy holiday is violently disrupted. Habesha are safe to do whatever they want because they control the armed forces. There is no such a thing as Oromia police or troops--all of the troops and security forces belong to the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, the engine of which is the Tigire People's Liberation Front.

Collective arrests and killings of Oromos have been going on for the last 21 years in Ethiopia. Nothing has changed since Meles Zenawi died and the figurehead Hailemariam Desalegn replaced him. What does it mean when on single day 150-200 purely members of the Oromo nationality are arrested and sent to Ethiopia's most notorious torture prison, where all kinds of primitive physical punishments are exacted upon them and they are let to waste away like they are nothing? It means apartheid. It means racist discrimination based on ethnicity.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa lists the names and pictures of 50 Oromos, mostly high-school teenagers and college-age students. Alemitu Lemi Jabessa, 19, and Ayantu Mohammed Mumme, 22, were two females among the arrested. These two young girls are high school students from West Shawa and East Hararge, central and eastern Oromia respectively. They came to be happy with their people, but they ended up being thrown to a torture prison. As many other Irreecha pilgrims did, they traveled long distances to get to the holy site in Bushoftu. There they were met by brute apartheid forces who did not like decorated Oromo costumes they were wearing. They hated the  ethnic identity of these girls and the Oromian national self-confidence they represented .   Alemitu and Ayantu are likely to be tortured and subjected to other forms of physical and emotional assaults in prison.

It is well known that Ethiopian troops and police deliberately torment and physically abuse women wherever they go. Wayyaanee troops and police are just a bunch of crude rapists and murderers. Will they abuse Tigrean females who are 19 and 22? NO! They abuse Oromos since they view them as "members of the enemy ethnic group". The occupying forces are notorious for using any form of abuses as weapon of continued segregation and collective humiliation.

The goal of Ethiopia's apartheid policy is to humiliate and traumatize as many Oromos as they can so that Oromos abandon their quest for freedom, culture and traditional religion, Waaqeffannaa. The goal is to force Oromos to speak Amaharic or Tigrigna, to make the Oromo abandon theirs and adopt Habesha cultures and religions. The goal is also to rid Oromia off its youngest and brightest future leaders. They aim to pave the way for Habeshas to extract the resources of Oromia exclusively for themselves.

An Amnesty International's record shows that just a year ago over 100 Oromo opposition leaders and activists were hunted down and sent to Ethiopia's torture prison en masse. No one Tigrean was in that. This shows apartheid policy is just continuing in Oromia. Then apartheid policy was enforced  under Meles Zenaw. Now a year later, it is being enforced under Hailemariam Desalegn, where 200 Oromos have been arrested from all over Oromia for a mere reason of gathering to celebrate their national holiday, Irreecha.

Although Ethiopia has over 86 ethnonational groups, no group else has been subjected to the level of collective state-sponsored violence (terrorism) as Oromos have been in Ethiopia. The privileged Habesha groups enjoy unparalleled protection from the Ethiopian government because of just satisfying the birth criterion of being co-ethnics with ruling elites.

Apartheid policies against the Oromo in Ethiopia are conducted systematically. Oromos are denied the right to assembly on their public holidays such as Irreecha. Oromos are denied economic, social and cultural rights in violation of major international human rights conventions and treaties needless to mention here. Even clothes they wear and the language they speak get Oromos in trouble. Despite their numerical majority, Oromos have been reduced to a minority status in the national government and in the national economy of the empire.

In contrast, Tigreans who are numerical minority are economic and power-majority in Ethiopia today. Oromos are exploited! They are arrested in large numbers frequently. We don't see the same things happen to members of the ethnic Tigire or Amahara groups from the north. We must ask ourselves "why not"? If a regime is protecting its own kind and attacks others over differences, that is a good sign of a racist segregation policy. Arresting, beating and transporting Oromos to torture prisons in several hundreds is just a normalized behavior among the Ethiopian-cum-Tigrean security forces. When reported about, Oromos are made into mere numbers. The numbers mask that all these people who have been arrested and jailed are somebodies' sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, cousins, nieces and so on and the pain is so great in every home!

As for Oromos in OPDO who are complicit in enforcing apartheid policies on behalf of Tigrean elites, history will not forgive you.
Traumatizing Oromos will only make them want their own state--Oromia, where they shall be fully protected when they succeed in creating the independent Democratic Republic of Oromia. To want autonomy within the current system is just too soft and too dangerous for our people.  Who would want to stay in an empire that targets Oromos as a collectivity for cultural and physical destruction? What will be the answers of some Diaspora-based Ethiopianist Oromo sellouts about this humiliating mass arrests? Do you still want to be part of the Ethiopian empire and help it in subjugating Oromos just to save your clan or sub-regional identity and loyalty to narrow Godina groups? Lest you forget harma-muraa and harka-muraa just to  fill up your tummy!

For those Qeerroo youth who took every risk and broke the news of the mass arrests, you are serving your nation and you must be proud. Keep up the good work. Oromia shall be free through your blood and sweat!  Ibidda dinaan gama hundaan Oromiyaatti qabisiifame haga dhaamisinutti boqannaa hinqabinu!

Chronology of the Evolution of Oromo Dialogue Forum (ODF)

In recent months, the activities of Oromo Dialogue Forum have been looming large in the Diasporas. The group has transformed  itself from holding small and secret house meetings, where the founders would Skype in from Germany, Norway and Minnesota to holding public meetings in cities such as Minneapolis and Washington DC, among others. The questions many ask is: How was this organization formed and where is it headed? Does what ODF do qualify as "dialogue"? Is it a neutral body to carry out dialogue?  In this, piece we will present a simple chronology of the formation and  evolution of ODF to help the public understand the organization.

August 2006          Brig Gen Kemal Galchu along with two other officers and 100 soldiers defects
from Ethiopian Army and joins OLF in Eritrea

2008              Brig Gen Kemal Galchu breaks away from OLF and  forms Jijiirama Koree Yeroo
with the goal of struggling for Ethiopia's unity.

July 2008      Dima Noggo misses OLF meeting, but attends Jijjiirama meeting expecting to rise to
                        power

July 2008      Lenco Lata declares that he is neither in OLF nor Jijjiirama

2010           Lico Bukura, Abdata Basire and Kanu Jirmo conspire and handover Jijjiirama armed
troops to Ethiopia and declare OLF is no longer at war with the Ethiopian regime

2010         Big Gen Galchu and Col. Hailu Gonfa declare they struggle  not for Oromo, but Ethiopia

2011         Jijjiirama splits into more than two factions--Galchu/Amin Jundi joined Ginbot7

2011        Mediation between Jijjiirama and OLF fails

2011        Ibrahim Mummee faction leaves the Ethiopianist Kemal Galchu group
due to internal power struggle and ego issues

2011        Lenco Lata gets fired for disciplinary issues from the OLF,  takes with him some OLF
                members

2012        Oromo Dialogue Forum (ODF) formed with tens of unhappy OLF dropouts and
dropouts from Big Gen Kamal Galchu's  faction

2012       Lenco Lata, Lenco Bati, Dima Noggo, Hassen Hussein and Bayan Asoba become
                important ODF officials

2012      ODF leaders lecture/hoodwink the general public always on a singe topic "The Oromo
Struggle Under the Leadership of the OLF: From Where to Where?"

2012       Obbo Lube Birru appears on radio and says ODF is part of the problem, not a neutral
third-party, to hold anything resembling cross-faction dialogue

2012     Oromo Affairs concludes  Jijjiirama renamed itself "Oromo Dialogue Forum"

ODF proposes that it wants to liberate the peoples of Ethiopia, but not the Oromo people specifically. The ODF disowns the Oromo and calls on Oromos to abandon calling themselves Oromos.  ODF asks people "why do you call yourselves Oromos?" The ODF leadership believes disowning Oromo is the main selling point of their programs to Ethiopians and the international community. The leaders also deny that they are Oromos--an example is when Dima Noggo said "inde agatami hono Ilu Ababor  Gore akebabi new yetweledkut" [by chance I was born in Ilu Ababa Bor around Gore] on Amaharic Esat TV. This might mean that if he were to control his birth, he would choose to be born in Gondar or Tigray or anywhere esle outside Oromia from non-Oromo parents.

So, does Oromo Dialogue Forum stand for Oromo interests or not? The above are the facts, you decide for yourself.

Oromo Dialogue Forum: A Personal Reflection

By Observer

Given the pitiful state in which the Oromo struggle for liberation finds itself today, I am always eager to listen to anyone who has any idea or suggestion on how we can surmount the complex challenges we are faced with. When I heard that “Waltajjii Marii Oromoo” or “Oromo Dialogue Forum” would be coming to a city near me on 9/22/2012, it was an easy decision for me to drive a few hours and hear what they had to say for two reasons. First, as a firm believer in dialogue among Oromo political actors and public, I wanted to contribute my two cents worth on the challenges we are facing and possible solutions and listen to other compatriots’ ideas and suggestions. Secondly, I was attracted to one of the topics of the forum which was “A new vision to renew the Oromo liberation struggle.” This particular topic brought many questions to my mind: What would this new vision be? Would it be a vision to bring about unity among Oromo political actors and organizations? And many more!

So, having attended the meeting, did I get a chance to contribute my two cents worth? Did I hear a new vision? What follows is my personal reflection.

The “dialogue” forum

I may have misunderstood what is meant by the word Dialogue in “Oromo Dialogue Forum”. To my knowledge, a dialogue is a two-way communication between persons who hold differing views on a subject(s), with the purpose of learning more about the subject from the other to try and come to a consensus. The notion is that neither side has a total grasp of the relevant issues, or a monopoly on the truth, pertaining to the subject under discussion. Through dialogue, a two-way communication, each side listens to the views of the other side in search of the truth.

However, the Washington DC ODF “dialogue” forum was hardly a forum for dialogue in the true sense of the word. If the purpose was to have a true dialogue to identify the deeply divisive political and other issues among Oromo political actors, to listen to competing views and to build a more constructive and collaborative relationship among them, then the OFD Washington DC forum has failed miserably.

The format of the “dialogue” forum was no different - in form or in content - from gatherings usually organized and conducted by political organizations such as the OLF, ULFO and others. Not that there is anything wrong with the way OLF and ULFO run their meetings. Unlike a proper dialogue forum where the purpose is to increase mutual understanding and build a more constructive and collaborative relationship by encouraging the airing of differing views, such gatherings are “convert-making” lectures by the “truth-holders”. They do not lend themselves to entertaining various differing views and therefore cannot be called “dialogue” forums in the true sense of the word. On such meetings, all presenters would have the same views that they present to the audience, one after another, in an effort to garner support for their views from attendees. No retention is made to present the gathering as anything other than a partisan political proselytizing meeting. No differing views from, or contrary to, that of the organizers are presented from the podium or from the floor. If ever a contrarian view is expressed from the floor, it would be in a form of question which the organizers would attempt to answer in an effort to convert the person who posed the question. But, for organizations like the OLF and ULFO, this is by design and they don’t misrepresent their meetings as “dialogue” forums.

The ODF meeting I attended in Washington DC was no different from the ones conducted by the OLF and other Oromo political organizations except in two regards. The first is that they called their meeting a “dialogue” forum which it was not for reasons provided above. Secondly, they claimed that they have not formed an organization nor do they have any intention to form one. I find these two assertions very misleading which I will address a few paragraphs down.

Unlike facilitators and/or participants in a dialogue forum, the ODF leaders appeared to me as being quite convinced that they have all the truth on the subject of the Oromo struggle and its challenges. The audience was there to receive the ODF “truth”. There was no solicitation of others’ views on the root causes of the challenges of the Oromo struggle or possible solutions which a true dialogue forum is expected to do. All presenters were the “truth-holders” on the subject and the way forward. This was not a dialogue at all, not a two-way communication, but a one-way lecturing which obviously is not meant by the term dialogue. I could not help but wonder if the leaders of ODF have a basic misunderstanding of the term dialogue or deliberately engaged in an opportunistic manipulation of the term and misleading the Oromo public.

On whether the ODF is a political organization or not

According to the opening remarks by one of the presenters, the ODF traces its genesis back to “Bu’ureessitoota fi miseensota buleeyyii ABO”. This is a group consisting of a couple of founders and some longtime members of the OLF that was formed in Dec. 2008 purportedly to try and reconcile the various factions of the OLF. Many suspected the true intention of this group at the time. The fear was that they might be using the reconciliation effort as a pretext to form another political organization. This was feared because it is widely believed by Oromos that there are already too many political organizations (basically little fiefdoms) and breeding more would worsen an already bad situation. By limiting or reducing the number of Oromo political organizations, the Oromo hope to reduce their internal squabbles which have consumed their time and energy that should have been expended on fighting the enemy. They are also mindful of the fact that the mushrooming of organizations would be to the detriment of pulling Oromo scarce resources together to give the nation a fighting chance against their colonizer.

When the formation of ODF was announced, Oromo’s worst fear was realized. Regardless of the leaders’ claim that ODF is not another Oromo political organization but a dialogue forum, there is no mistaking that it is one. If the Washington DC “dialogue” was any indication and with its manifesto of democratizing Ethiopia, it is, in fact, one itching to join the fray of Oromo little fiefdoms a.k.a political organizations. This was particularly evident from the speech made by the last speaker via a video conference in which he bitterly complained about being dismissed from the OLF and that they will not take it lying down any more.

It is obvious to all intelligent attendees of their meetings that they are already a political organization to which they have the right. In the Washington DC meeting, they presented their political manifesto; they even distributed survey questionnaires that asked attendees whether they agree with their views or not and whether they would like to become members or just supporters. However, when asked if they already are, or in the process of forming, an organization, they denied that they are or plan to. There was no need to insult their audience’s intelligence. What happened to telling the truth and earn the trust of those they are targeting for recruitment? As it is, trust is in short supply in the Oromo struggle. Why make it worse, if they are really trying to make a difference?

ODF’s “New Vision”

The ODF manifesto presented at the meeting consisted of seven points. The points range from struggling for citizenship rights in the Ethiopian empire to accepting federalism and re-interpreting the Oromo right to self-determination. The current Ethiopian federalism, according to ODF, is one without democracy. In order to realize true federalism, the ODF will struggle for democratic changes in Ethiopia. The way to do that, says ODF, is by re-interpreting the Oromo question of self-determination as a question for citizenship rights thereby closely mirroring the questions of other nations and nationalities in the empire, including that of the Habasha. By so interpreting the Oromo question, ODF hopes to gain sympathy and support for the Oromo struggle from Habasha and other groups. In other words, for ODF, there is no difference between the demand or question of the Oromo nation and, say, that of the Habasha groups.

But this is exactly what Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) and Oromo People’s Congress (OPC) (now merged into Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) have been advocating for many years to no avail. Even, OPC, a proponent of “one-man-one-vote” for close to two decades has gained no sympathy or support from these groups that ODF wants to solicit support from. Having failed to learn from history and current affairs, the General Kemal Gelchu Group – former comrades of the ODF - has been promoting the same ideal since January 2012.

So what is ODF’s new vision? Nothing new, I should say – for someone who has been following OFDM, OPC and the Kemal Gelchu group and leaders of the ODF. If there is no new vision, then what is the purpose of forming another organization to advance the same ideal? Why not join, or merge with, the Kemal Gelchu group or the OFC?

Seeking a second chance at leadership

The organizers and presenters of the ODF in Washington DC were all former leaders of the OLF. In fact, some of them are founders. Each of them held positions of leadership including chairmanship, deputy chairmanship, membership in the central committee and spokesmanship of the organization and heading the foreign affairs department at different times and for extended periods of time. In effect, these are former leaders campaigning for a second chance to lead an Oromo liberation organization. Whether that organization is one to be formed soon or another faction of the OLF to be announced only time will tell.

This group of former leaders agrees on two things: (a) that the OLF has failed to rally the Oromo people to achieve its objective; (b) that they don’t share any blame in OLF’s failure. While their first assertion has some truth – that the OLF has failed in its mission – I find it a turnoff that former leaders of their stature blame their organization’s failure on circumstances (the usual old excuses) and their former comrades in arms while exonerating themselves. They have made themselves self-appointed judges, jury and the prosecutors in the OLF failure saga.

It is very well known that failure defines ones character as a leader. When leaders refuse to take responsibility for their organization’s failure under their watch, it shows their lack of character. As Norman Schwarzkopf once said “Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy." Not without character! Leaders deserve a second chance when they admit failure and have learned during the process of failing. Leaders who hold someone else accountable for their failures and blame the circumstances to deflect criticism for a failed outcome deserve no more chance at leading.

Sitting through over two hours of speeches by leaders of the ODF, I heard not a single admission of mistake on their part much less their role in getting the Oromo struggle to this pitiful point that it finds itself in today.

If they would like to be taken seriously, then they would admit their personal failures, stop scapegoating and blaming others and circumstances, take responsibility as longtime leaders and learn from their mistakes and failures before asking the Oromo public for a second chance.

Failure can be turned into an opportunity to learn and grow. I say it can because it requires a particular mindset to benefit from your failure. Without that mindset, all your failures will go to waste. This is true in politics as it is in personal life for a leader as well as a follower. So what is that mindset?

It is a mindset that is willing and able to reflect on past experience – past actions and their outcomes. It is only through such reflections that one learns one’s strengths, weaknesses and the environment and conditions in which actions were undertaken and what could have been done differently that could have resulted in a positive outcome. It is not enough to admit collective failure. One needs to evaluate one’s role in the failure. This is even more so if one is a leader under whose watch an organization – business or political – failed. Denying (to one self and others) failures and personal accountability and scapegoating or blaming on “globalization, end of cold war, etc.” will not do. Leaders without such a mindset cannot learn from past failures and therefore deserve no second chance.

In summary

Dialogue among Oromo political actors and organizations is long overdue. The purpose and objective of such a dialogue should not be partisan political proselytizing which the ODF Washington DC “dialogue” forum was, but one that is open to entertaining competing views.

ODF has all the makings of an active political organization vying for Oromo attention. With its manifesto of democratization of Ethiopia, it shall be sharing Oromo political space with OFC, the Kemal Gelchu group and other forces. Don’t insult your audience’s intelligence. Don’t present it as a “dialogue” forum which it is not. Come out and introduce your organization for what it is—a budding political organization.

Your (ODF) manifesto contains no new vision. Recognize others who presented that vision before you; join and strengthen them. Don’t create another fiefdom. The Oromo struggle for liberation will not benefit from another group of a few individuals claiming to speak on its behalf. Unity is strength.

As former leaders of the OLF, admit personal failure for the organization disintegrated under your watch. Tell us what you have learned from your failures and what you would do differently before asking the Oromo people to follow you again.

Potential of Social Media Toward Seasoned Oromo Political and Civic Engagement

Becoming Part of the Social Network Revolution

Social media usage in political and civic engagement in nations like the United States is at an all time high, as shown by the high volumes of tweets and Facebook updates during  the 2012 U.S presidential debates. The first U.S. presidential debate saw  over 10 million tweets, which is the highest of all the  debates. During the third debate on foreign policy, the number of  tweets fell to 6.5 million posts. The numbers tell us that Americans are using social media to support their most favorite candidate(s) and issues. The competition to tweet more among peers in a network was obviously visible.  There were also tens of Oromos in diaspora who cared to  tweet about the American presidential debates.

For clarity,  social media refers to interactive platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and numerous others by means of which individuals and communities create user-generated content or share content created by others.  Broadly speaking, social media are used for personal, professional and business purposes.

A report produced by Pew Research Center on the Internet indicates that the use of social media in political engagement is becoming a common practice in the United States. According to the survey,  4-in-10 American adults use social media for civic and political engagement.  Specifically, current trends show that Americans have put social media to the following specific uses:

...social media users have employed the platforms to post their thoughts about civic and political issues, react to others’ postings, press friends to act on issues and vote, follow candidates, ‘like’ and link to others’ content, and belong to groups formed on social networking sites.
Watch this video on the power of networked individuals and the three revolutions: Internet broadband revolution, the mobile connectivity revolution  and social networking revolution.

One cannot advocate that the Oromo and other Horn of African peoples use the Internet at the same rate or for the same purposes with Americans. The empirical reality such as the low level  penetration of the Internet and low level of literacy and human rights conditions, among other factors, will obviously limit our ability to employ these technologies to their fullest potentials in the homeland--Oromia. Internet penetration in the Ethiopian empire  stands at under one 1 percent --to be exact only 0.5 percent of Ethiopia's population has access to the Internet.  Unfortunately, due to the culture of pervasive surveillance and state's fear of the Internet and media, beside economic reasons, Ethiopia is officially a technological laggard at the very tail of most African nations

The rough estimates for Oromos with access to the Internet is  by far less than 0.5 percent because Internet access is limited to urban business, academic and political elites. The vast majority of Oromos live in the rural areas in Oromia and there is no way they can use Twitter or Facebook--they have not even heard about them. The urban Oromo are under constant surveillance even to use these communication technologies for personal networking reasons. The government restricts Oromo's access to technologies for fear that they will use them in organizing a revolution. For that reason, one can estimate that Internet penetration in Oromia  can be the lowest of all the regions of the empire.  In other words, the Oromo are in digital darkness.

In the diaspora,  although exact figures don't exist, it is clear that more and more Oromos are globally networked on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. The key questions are:
  • How effectively are  the Oromos in the transatlantic Diasporas using  the Internet to advocate on behalf of their people who suffer  oppression in Oromia-Ethiopia?
  •   To what extent are  social media used in social and civic engagement?
  • If not,  how are we going to try to bring the Oromo quest for freedom, justice and self-governance into the 21st century by motivating more and more people to engage online creatively not only within the group, but beyond with expatriates interested in the Horn of Africa?

Shortcomings in Diasporic Oromo Social Media Utilization

A random quick key word search (# hashtags) on Twitter and Facebook may reveal that there are only a few Oromo voices on social media who use them for political and civic engagement.  A bulk of communication centers around personal usage, as opposed to professional. Approximately, the majority of young Oromo people don't seem to be interested in politics or civic engagement for whatever reasons.  In contrast, a search under the key word "Ethiopia" reveals volumes of deliberate promotion of the current or past political status quo.

Strategies Going Forward

We cannot just lament the scarcity and immaturity of Oromo civic and political engagement on social media. There are ways we can increase Oromo presence on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Indeed the volume and quality of information we put out on our people is likely to contribute to making the plight of the Oromo people known to the world. The less we do that, the less we get international attention and the more the Habesha control and dominate  the social media landscape in disseminating their politics of distortion and misinformation. The following are enumerated strategies to raise our social media presence:

  1. More youth and adult need to create Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts;
  2. Youth and adults need to recognize that social media have global impact in opinion-making;
  3. Systematic use of social media is expected from Diaspora  Oromo youth and adults; Currently, key word postings of messages (or where hashtags serve as prefixes to key words in postings, e.g. #Oromo, #Ethiopia #HumanRights) show Oromo absence. When messages are hashtagged under issues such human rights or geographic areas such #Oromia, #Oromo #Ethiopia etc., other users interested in those key words are likely to find them globally and to build on them. If you want your tweets to be globally visible, using key words preceded by the symbol # (hashtag) is key. Examples of  hashtagged key words would be somethings like #Oromo #Oromia #Ethiopia #Africa #HumanRights #SocialMedia and so on. Hashtags help your posts to be stored under  key words of your choice. You can really take time and think of what key words will get your posts the most exposure and what key words are relevant to what you are tweeting or saying. If you are tweeting about puppies, you may put it under #puppy, instead of other irrelevant keywords such as #politics.
  4. Seasoned messaging is required in social media. Messaging is how you say what you say, which will make all the difference in the world in interesting or dis-interesting your audience. Stay on the positive and rational side of messaging where possible.  Combative and less substantive messaging don't go far with readers of today. So,  one of the best ways Oromos should communicate on social media is to reasonably make their points by supporting it with evidence or argumentation. Oromos should also point out  flaws in others' attacks on Oromo. Look for vulnerabilities in Abyssinian thinking and respond reasonably by refuting them. Sure there are plenty of those vulnerabilities specially knowing that Habesha elites thrive on fabrications.  We should provoke others with wrong ideas about Oromo into rethinking their positions, instead of always being provoked into anger  and going on the defense. We have the responsibility to correct wrongs;
  5. Youth groups in Oromia must take pictures/videos  of human rights abuses and share them with the media in the diaspora for further international exposure; Qeerroo, the National Youth Movement for Freedom and Democracy, for instance has done an extraordinary job in documenting the arrests of over 200 Oromos at many Irreecha sites in Oromia.  This is clearly a progress because Qeerroo documented human rights abuses in multiple media types: video, pictures,  text and audio mainly. This trend needs to be strengthened in Oromia. The youth in the Diaspora must help Qeerroo get information out by providing various forms of vetted assistance or resources. More work needs to be done in Oromia, where Oromo Muslims are also killed for peacefully standing up for their religious freedoms.
  6.  Oromo students and intellectuals must come out and publish articles and opinions on the Internet, including submitting articles to reputable magazines, websites, and newspapers of the West.
  7. A concerted effort must be made to create a few media networks in addition to expanding and creating new blogs and websites.

Closing Notes

These are some thoughts on how to effectively use social media to effect social change. Obviously, the research done does not warrant making all those recommendations. But, it is high time that we turned social media to the Oromo advantage--to engage in civic and political issues creatively in the 21st century.  There is a lot we can learn from social media usage in political and civic engagement in the U.S.  It is hoped that this stimulates more thoughts, and more importantly sparks more actions from readers.

Sacrificing myself protesting injustice, discrimination and oppression against the Oromo people is my greatest honor

Sign the White House Human Rights  petition and help Bakala Garba and over 20,000 Oromo prisoners of conscience get released or heard worldwide!

As you might be aware, the news of Ethiopia's unjust sentencing of senior Oromian opposition leaders Bakala Garba and Olbana Lelisa of the Oromo Federalist Congress has shocked the conscience of many Oromos in Oromia and the diaspora. Now that you have read all the news and the courageous words that Bakala Garba spoke to the face of his tormentors and jailers,  please take your time and ACT by signing the petition promoted below.  Bakala Garba said to the colonizers: "Sacrificing myself  protesting injustice, discrimination and oppression [against the Oromo people) is my greatest honor."

Honor these Oromian national  heroes by at least signing a petition and sharing it in your social circle. They tried to do something for their people, but they were stopped prematurely by the undemocratic and undemocratizable  Ethiopian empire.

Click  on the image and sign petition
Signatures needed are 24, 992, and so far as of today (November 10) only  8 people have signed it.  In the past, some of our  diaspora members  have lacked initiatives, and even failed to complete a petition with less signature numbers needed than the current one. Every bit of initiative you take shows that you care about our people who look Oromo colonizers in the face and tell them that their spirits are unbreakable until Oromia is free and independent . Only our inaction can break the spirits of these heroes in their torture prison cells. It is your civic duty to share this with your friends and family on your social media network or to give calls to your friends and loved ones in order to get them to sign it.

Notes:
The petition was created by a certain Jabessa W., and promoted by Oromo Press for further public exposure.

"DEBATE" REDEEMS ETHIOPIA, FINDS OROMO AT FAULT FOR SUFFERING INFLICTED BY ABYSSINIANS

$

The purpose of this piece is to bring into the open a lurking question that is often avoided as a taboo by Oromians to maintain internal harmony. That question  relates to the divisive and self-defeating agenda propagated by Ethiopian nationalists of Oromo descent.  The article focuses on  collaborative elites who have betrayed the Oromo movement in the name of a community. The idea of 'Ethiopian nationalists of Oromo origin' is no fiction. They exist and they are taking a toll on our just movement and cause.  Even more than Amharas and Tigires do, the primary concern of this enclave is to maintain one Ethiopia at the cost of belittling and even destroying the long-standing Oromo question for self-determination up to independence. The group masquerades in dubious and faddy ideas of Ethiopianism, Horn of Africanism and internationalism, but they do frequently throw in "Oromo" as a way of adding flavor to their hidden beliefs in Ethiopia. Collaborators act like 'House Negros', those  slaves on American plantations who were more concerned for the needs and well-beings of their owners than were the owners themselves.

Debate About Ethiopia's Future: Whose Fault?

To be specific, this  response was provoked by the Ethiopianist agenda promoted by Opride.com under the title, "Oromo hold the stump key to Ethiopia's future." This is the title under which the Opride Editor introduces his Ethiopianist belief by masking it as "roundup of opinions" from so-called experts and officials on current issues in Ethiopia. The "debate" aims at prescribing "the role Oromo should play in Ethiopia's politics," as a means of promoting the territorial, linguistic and cultural integrity of the Ethiopian state. The debate is part of a growing and embarrassing posturing by some elites from within.

The underlying assumptions in the title as well as in the phrase about the role is this: 'Oromos are being massively persecuted because they have played no role in Ethiopia and the refusal to play that role has resulted in massive killings, incarcerations and abuses.' In fact, the Editor's clearly  on a mission to give Ethiopia a "future" by using  the Oromo people as a raw material toward achieving that goal. It is also implied in the Editor's assertion that the cause of massive Oromo suffering in Ethiopia are Oromos themselves who have refused to change their behavior--does this sound like Oromo Dialogue Forum and Jijjiirma  rhetoric?  Right. It does and it is.

Indeed, the blogger was explicit in stating that Oromo political behavior is the only suspect in causing Oromo suffering when he wrote:  "How would/should the Oromo behave differently this time than it did during the last two decades?" This question is the same outdated  question asked by died-hard and racist Abyssinian nationalists. The Editor thus excels the Habesha at advocating for their "Ethiopia" more than they do. He does this by implicitly finding Oromos at fault for the killings, murders, jailing, and evictions they suffer in thousands, millions. He appears to mean the Oromo have self-inflicted genocide on themselves, even when the identity of soldiers who shoot at them are in fact Abyssinian soldiers  or co-opted Ethiopian nationalists gun-carriers, nafaxnyaa-collaborators. Some pro-Turkey writers also blamed the victims for genocide.

If you read the introduction to the debate closely, you will observe that not  only is  Opride.com's priority the Ethiopian cause over the Oromian one, but also that it is highly dismissive of the Oromo National Movement in general. It blames the failures of peaceful and armed Oromo opposition on Oromos themselves. It is inwardly focused to deliberately divide the Oromo to efface the agency of Abyssinian colonialism from the equation. The blogger writes,

So far, attempts of the Oromo to wrest the reins of power away from the Tigreans who assumed it on account of their military superiority, from within the ruling party through the OPDO, using the political system through the efforts of Marara's ONC and Bulcha's OFDM in the ballot box, and from without through OLF with arms and subversion, have all come to naught. As a consequence, the great potentials of the Oromo have remained what it has always been: just a potential.

What is fascinating here is not really the writer's declaration that the  'Oromo struggle achieved nothing and will achieve nothing unless it is subservient to Ethiopian nationalism' as some kind of marginal appendix for a bigger goal of keeping Ethiopia's future secure, but the extra-textual beliefs that are behind such statements.

Sources of Anti-Oromia Beliefs: Perils of Uniting with Menelik's Ras Darghe

Enough with the textual analysis. Now let's examine where such strong beliefs in Ethiopian nationalism of purportedly Oromo origin come from. What informs the worldview of the author?: Ethiopian nationalism? Godina (zonal-clan) identification with disgruntled and expelled ex-members and leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front? Or is it the editor's own passionate  hatred towards seeing a free, self-ruling or independent Oromia? Is the blogger alone in holding this kind of anti-Oromian sentiment, but pro-Ethiopian belief?

Based on close observations of other agenda promoted on Opride.com over the years,  and based on  hearing the informal conversations of the Editor in the past,  his position on Oromo politics and Oromo national movement becomes crystal clear. The writer/blogger is a staunch believer in anti-OLF and anti-Oromianism. In a private conversation with a respected Faranjii struggling for  the Oromo, the same editor voiced a shocking opinion that 'the OLF must be destroyed and Oromos must start from the scratch." This belief is a part of larger belief system Opride.com  shares with Kamal Galchu's group, and some friends of his that I would not like to name here. The blogger and his associates strongly believe in following leaders blindly even when those leaders are wrong as long as they share some clan or Godina identity. This arises from a culture of a very localized tightly knit group.

If you look at the list of the so-called  experts and officials, you will see that they are the ones closest in region and belief to the promoter of the "debate" with one odd exception.  Two of these were leaders of Kamal Glachu's Jijjiirama and an Oromo Dialogue Forum's representative  who  admittedly are in-bred Ethiopian nationalists. They are already infected with Ethiopian nationalism and a house-negro mentality. They humiliate many brave Oromo heroes from Arsi who confronted and fought Menelik's army  at Annolee (arma-muraa aannolee), where they chopped off the breasts of Oromo women and girls. What Oromo man or woman in his/her right mind betrays the Oromo cause and enters into alliance with Ethiopianists who chopped off the breasts of women and young girls, and amputated men's limbs in a genocidal violence of epic proportion?

It is wrong to teach Oromo to give up the culture of resistance and adopt submission to the same forces who have butchered them. These individuals must be exorcised by the majority of their own constituency even before they bring more shame on the Arsi and the larger Oromo public and tarnish their images as collaborators with the enemy both at home and in the diaspora.

This is the debate we need to have. It must be crystal clear the purpose here is to hold no hatred  toward any Oromian tribes, including Arsi. What one is saying is individuals who claim this identity and push Ethiopianism should not be let to succeed by the larger group. They should be helped and be brought to their minds so they  have  a clear stance with the cause of their people.

Oromo-Ethiopianists running around trying to reach out to hateful Abyssinian are making  fools of themselves. In recent years (since the Jijjiirma splinter of 2008), we have seen several Oromo groups and individuals making overtures to Abyssinian  movements and even joining them. But, why don't we see Abyssinians trying to reach out to Oromos? What some who claim Oromo origin are doing are simple acts of the declaration inferiority and defeat on themselves. We know even those inbred Ethiopian nationalists who joined Ginbot 7 are being treated with contempt--just like they were supposed to. How can a human being withstand such a humiliation and still fail to learn from it?

I don't understand. Do you?

Thanks to  collaborators like  Junedin Saddo and other affiliated elites, stories are already being heard that collaborators are denying young Oromo graduates employment opportunities based on region. One of the questions regional government officials ask students is, "BA qabdaa?" It sounds like the interviewer is asking "do you have a bachelor's degree," but the the acronym is secretly coined by insiders and it means "are you from Bale and Arsi?" Poor job-seekers from other regions of Oromia who don't understand the real question answer, "Eyyeen, BA qaba," or "I do have a BA", referring to degrees, but they realize what that is after leaving unemployed. This is a form of internal racism. This is not to mention that some collaborators also shuttle around Oromia harassing and taking people to jail. It is primarily the responsibility of the the in-group to avert this opportunistic  disasters before it even becomes  more deeply rooted.

Oromo as Scapegoat for Seeking Redemption for Ethiopia

Somehow, the most implicit assumption is: 'if abuses do not  not happen to my clan as much,  Oromia's suffering is not my problem. I don't have a problem with an Ethiopia that is privileging me and funding my extravagant lifestyle and calls me "the rising Oromo middle class." Of course, I am more like my masters than everyday Oromo. So who cares?'  This is a dangerous and explosive phenomenon of divide and conquer for which some among us have already fallen. To address this issue head on,  people must rationally follow thoughts and ideas over ill-intentioned  men from their regions or religions.

Below are some of the excuses individuals similar to the Opride Editor give to justify their conviction in Ethiopian nationalism:

  • Oromo is a large and diverse community your perspective is one [way of talking down to people]
  • Isolationism is not an Oromo way of life
  • I don't hesitate to criticize Ethiopia's wrong ways. But I believe the country [Ethiopia] can be redeemed
  • South Sudan is fundamentally different {from Oromia's cause}. The jury is still out on Eritrea. Oromiya is destined for greater things [meaning it will remain part of Ethiopia]
  • All small nations in the south are anxious about Oromo's political intentions and our politicians are not reaching out [therefore, we should give up our quest freedom]
  • I find it unfortunate that the prospect of Oromos staking a claim in Ethiopia as opposed to breaking away is repulsive

The above  list is of beliefs is from several different like-minded and like-regioned  Ethiopian nationalists of Oromo origin. The beliefs were collected from social media interactions. These are ideas from seemingly relatively better lettered people. In reality, the beliefs show how unlearned lettered persons can also be. They joke about the blood Oromo shed, and the pains of oppression millions are going through everyday.  All the textual and extra textual evidence cited so far point to a fundamentally disturbing tendency in a small segment of elites from a particular community. Perhaps, this calls for some reconnaissance and moments of reflection for the Editor and like-minded groups in order to rethink their approach in the best interest of the Oromo national struggle for the liberation of Oromia.

What Good Will It Be?

No one can impose on Oromo  a subservient role in Ethiopia's future by asking them to give up their just cause for liberation. Oromo have the right to hold a referendum without duress to decide their destiny. That will happen only when we are victorious in winning the war imposed upon us against our will. It won't happen by making foolish overtures to those who kill us.

My religion is Oromia and the freedom of the Oromo people, but even scriptures teach how uselessness is  gaining the whole world, but losing oneself. The Bible asks:  "What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" Regardless of your religion, if you think about this, you find out many Oromos have unfortunately and disgracefully lost their souls and themselves in an attempt to gain their own prominence at the expense of their people's demise.  They minimize their people's causes as "narrow" by openly claiming that they are for Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa and international frontier warriors.  Unfathomable crazy world people live in to please others, isn't it?

It does not take a genius to figure out that seeking a solution for Oromo in alliance with  the same anti-Oromo forces that want to destroy them is doomed to fail. The peril is so great.  For Opride Editor to ignore  Oromians who are suffering because of who they are in terms of nationality, religion and the resources they sit on  is nothing less than endorsing and promoting genocide, Ethiopian nationalism cast as "Oromos hold the stump key for Ethiopia's future." Why does Ethiopia future matter to Oromo over their own destiny aft all?

In fact, the assertion that Oromos "hold a stump key" is not only a waste of an English expression, but it is also a false and empty statement. "Stump" is main part of something [Oromo call this hundee]. To the contrary,  Oromo hold no key to Ethiopia's future as they don't have political, economic and military powers--it takes a real struggle to regain these. The Abyssinians who have really held 'the stump key to Ethiopia's future'  utilized that opportunity only to serve their own co-ethnics.  They still hold it.  The goal of Oromo national struggle is not maintain colonialism or Ethiopia, but to dismantle (to make Abyssinians drop the stump key to Oromia)  in all its manifestations, including the current structure that the Opride blogger has wanted to preserve. How can you try to preserve a fundamentally infected Ethiopian system? In cases of cancer affecting a particular part of the body, physicians amputate the infected part in order to prevent the cancer from spreading to the rest of healthy body. This cancer reference is to the Ethiopian state. The healthy body to saved is a reference independent Oromia.

What else can be more insulting to Oromo than inviting the anti-Oromo Ethiopianist expatriate scholar, Donald Levine whose capacity for learning new tricks is turned off by hate. The following anti-Oromo comment by Levine sits well with the Opride Editor and other fifth columnists:

Oromo groups invited themselves into vast areas–from Harar to Gojjam, from Hadiyya to Tigray–in many cases, no less aggressively than Amhara and Tigreans were to do against Oromo and many other ethnicities during the reign of Emperor Menelik. Once settled in those areas, many of them affiliated with the Ethiopian center. They helped Sarsa Dengel combat the Turkish invaders in the late 16th C.
To serve whatever external interests,  Levine is concerned in  keeping Ethiopia intact. He does not seem to care if Oromo are wiped off the face of the earth although he pretends to. If you look at the statement quoted above, you see Levine does not have any source substantiating the Oromo aggression against northerners. He fabricated this deeply hateful statement as a strong denial of centuries of genocidal campaigns against the Oromo people. What is more disturbing is that Levine scapegoats  and implicates Oromos in a fictitious violence made in his head. His purpose here is to delegitimize the goal of the Oromo national liberation movement for independence and self-determination. What can one expect from an anti-Oromo author who wrote two  books after a decade of living with Menzes. In the books not worthy to mention here, he uses the "G-word" to refer to Oromo as recently as 2000. Levine is more Menze than a Menze Amahara and he has always argued how important and superior their civilization are compared to those of the Oromo. Expectedly, Levine will only intervene in ways that serve the interests of the Abyssinian center the most.

Opride.com Editor's intentions are most questionable because he left out the best known Oromo scholars who have published more on Oromia and the Horn  per capita than any of the so-called "debate" guests and experts--his buddies!  One could observe how this editor has been negative about Oromo scholarship as well, including trashing our achievements so far. He trashes both scholarly and struggle achievements.

The Debate Does Not Hold Water

Several Oromo scholars have indeed refuted many of the arguments against Oromia's Independence as a natural right and viable option for the Oromo people. Expat and homegrown Oromo-Ethiopianists don't like putting independence as an option on the table  for the Oromo nation. They fix debates and issues in terms of personal considerations that have nothing to do with the Oromo people.  I won't go into the details of other options Oromos have here. I will just leave you with a strong case that Mekuria Bulcha makes for Oromo Self-Government. Bulcha's case   is completely contrary to the Opride Editor's a nd his invited contributors' relegation of the Oromo question to secondary (subservient) role to the Abyssinian center.

Finally, it is clear that some in-bred Ethiopian nationalists (fifth columnists) are primarily interested in the future of Ethiopia. They don't seem to  care if Oromia is wiped off the map along with 50 million Oromos. If they seem to be pushing for the Oromo cause, they often do that for their own opportunistic reasons--financial or divisive purposes. Oromos are well advised not to listen to these people; they must be held accountable and made   socially outcast.  Doing this is easy if you believe in the future of Oromia than the future of Ethiopia that  kills, tortures, rapes and humiliates Oromians.

The debate we should have right now is not how to keep Ethiopia together when our people are bleeding and mourning in their tens of  thousands. The right question: how can we free them? In fact, the right debate should be on examining the dangers of in-bred Ethiopian nationalism on our struggle to free our people.

If you would like to contribute articles on the dangers of home-grown Ethiopian nationalism and how to overcome them, please send us your article at oromopress@gmail.com and we'll publish it for you. We should learn to address crucial issues  head-on before they fester and spiral out of control as the time passes. The general tendency in Oromo communication is that we wait to the last minute to bring pressing issues into the open.
